Mission Statement

The Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world.

Job Description:

The Salvation Army is seeking a seasoned fundraising leader to serve as Director of Development for the Prairie and Northern Division. This is a senior, relationship-driven role at the intersection of major gift fundraising and people leadership.

Reporting to the Sr. Director, Leadership & Legacy Giving, you will own a comprehensive fundraising program spanning major gifts, legacy giving, and mid-level donor cultivation, while driving consistency, accountability, and performance across your team. You will personally steward the Division's top donors and build long-term relationships that sustain The Salvation Army's mission for decades.

If you thrive in a large, mission-driven organization, lead with patience and flexibility, and bring a genuine passion for community impact, this role is for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a team of fundraising professionals across legacy giving, mid- and major gift portfolios, setting performance metrics, coaching staff, and driving accountability
  • Personally steward and solicit a portfolio of the Division's top donors, conducting face-to-face cultivation, relationship management, and direct gift asks
  • Develop and execute annual and multi-year fundraising strategies for Leadership & Legacy Giving, including moves management, prospect cultivation cycles, and stewardship plans
  • Lead the mid-level fundraising program, identifying and developing donor pathways from mid-level to major giving through strategic touchpoints and personalized engagement
  • Drive capital campaign fundraising efforts in collaboration with divisional leadership and external consultants
  • Establish and review KPIs, fundraising targets, and reporting frameworks across all donor streams, ensuring goals are met and exceeded
  • Recruit, onboard, train, and mentor fundraising staff; foster a high-performance team culture grounded in The Salvation Army's values
  • Manage the Development budget and provide input on financial policies and resource allocation
  • Serve as a visible, collaborative leader within divisional and territorial Development teams, partnering closely with Public Relations and divisional leadership
  • Represent The Salvation Army with professionalism and integrity at community, donor, and stakeholder events.

Key Skills and Experiences:

  • 7–10 years of progressive fundraising experience, including proven success in face-to-face major gift solicitation
  • Demonstrated experience managing and leading a fundraising team, setting goals, developing staff, and building a culture of performance
  • Deep knowledge of relationship fundraising including major gifts, legacy/planned giving, and mid-level donor programs
  • Strong CRM proficiency, ideally Raiser’s Edge; comfortable with donor data analysis and moves management tracking
  • Technical understanding of charitable tax implications, planned gifts, and estate administration
  • Experience in capital campaign fundraising, strategic planning, and budget management
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; you build trust with donors, colleagues, and volunteers alike
  • High adaptability and cultural flexibility; you lead diverse teams with empathy and adjust your style to meet people where they are
  • Comfort working within a large, complex organization; you are patient with process, collaborative by nature, and resilient under ambiguity
  • Post-graduate degree in fundraising, nonprofit management, or a related field; CFRE designation required

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $109,470.40 to $136,843.20 with a maximum of $164,195.20.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.

This recruitment is being led by Gerard Search on behalf of The Salvation Army.
