What are GFPs (Green Fluorescent Proteins)?

GFPs, or Green Fluorescent Proteins, are proteins originally derived from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria that exhibit bright green fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet or blue light. They are widely used as markers in molecular and cellular biology to visualize and track gene expression, protein localization, and cellular events in real time. The gene encoding GFP can be fused to other genes, allowing researchers to study biological processes in living cells without harming them. GFP and its variants have become essential tools in fields such as genetics, developmental biology, and medical research.
