Job description

The Equipment Operator will operate and maintain heavy, motorized equipment in a safe and efficient manner at a landfill.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate heavy, motorized equipment used in earth moving, trash processing, and composting operations, including but not limited to front-end wheel loaders, water tankers, dozers, scrapers, landfill trash compactors, mobile compost mixers, tub grinders, concrete crushers, bailers, excavator, ADT trucks, and other equipment to support a variety of operations.
  • Process incoming material with heavy equipment to build waste cells per designed landfill permitted plans.
  • Maintain the general working area in a leveled and organized manner.
  • Work closely with traffic control spotters to identify fill areas to be used for dumping solid waste.
  • Operate trash compactors to process trash in 2-foot lifts working on 3:1 or 4:1 slopes.
  • Operate dozer to cover and maintain level tipping areas for daily operations.
  • May operate water tanker and similar equipment for dust control, dirt compaction, and watering grass.
  • Build and maintain access and hauling roads.
  • Use handheld mobile radio units or company cell phone to coordinate tasks and resources.
  • Perform pre and post operations inspection and perform daily maintenance required of the equipment in accordance with Company policy and maintain accurate logs and records.
  • Identify potentially hazardous or unacceptable materials and report immediately to supervisor for proper handling of material.
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by management.
  • May be assigned general laborer duties.

Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desired, but not required.
  • One (1) or more years of heavy equipment operation experience.
  • Must be able to meet criteria for safety sensitive functions according to Company standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to follow instructions and perform duties under limited supervision.
  • Ability to operate any equipment necessary to perform job.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend reports to accurately complete daily assignments.
  • Ability to work in accordance with Company safety policies & procedures, OSHA (Occupational and Safety Health Act) requirements, as well as all local, state, and federal laws.

Physical/Mental Demands:
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach and lift in an outdoor environment 90% of the time.
  • Must be able to use hands and fingers, kneel, crawl, talk, hear, climb and balance.
  • Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to manually lift/move up to 25 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to manually push/move up to 50 pounds with assistance from another employee.

Working Conditions:
  • Outdoors in varying adverse weather; low/high temperatures, wet and/or high humidity or sudden temperature changes.
  • Exposure to outdoor elements, unpleasant odors, small space such as equipment cabs, exposure to fumes, dust, or uneven ground.
