Job description

Job Title: Health & Safety Specialist III / Telecom Safety Specialist
Position Type: Contract (7 months, with possible extension)
Schedule: Part-time (5-8 hour days, approximately 25 hours per week)
Location: West Monroe, LA (71294)
Pay Rate: $40/hr - $46.50/hr (W2)
Position Summary
The Telecom Safety Specialist provides field oversight of contractors performing telecom tower construction, foundation work, antenna/line installation, underground fiber optic boring, and related civil activities.
This role ensures compliance with safety standards, construction best practices, and applicable industry regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Contractor Qualification & Work Authorization
  • Verify contractor training, certifications, and adherence to safety requirements
  • Ensure understanding of site-specific hazards, underground utilities, and clearance requirements prior to mobilization
  • Review construction and fiber boring plans to ensure protection of existing infrastructure
Field Oversight of Construction Activities
  • Monitor tower erection, climbing activities, rigging/lifting operations, foundation work, and antenna/line installation
  • Ensure proper use of fall protection, establishment of exclusion zones, and equipment inspections
  • Intervene and stop work when unsafe conditions are identified
Fiber Optic & Underground Work Oversight
  • Oversee underground boring and excavation activities, ensuring proper utility locates and depth compliance
  • Monitor bore paths to prevent damage to existing infrastructure
  • Ensure proper potholing, marking, and documentation of completed work
Hazard Identification & Safety Reviews
  • Review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for construction, excavation, and directional boring activities
  • Validate implementation of hazard controls for high-risk tasks
  • Promote a strong safety culture through coaching and field engagement
Qualifications
  • Experience in telecom construction, tower erection, or fiber optic installation
  • Strong knowledge of industry safety standards and regulations (e.g., OSHA, NESC)
  • Ability to work in the field and effectively guide contractors on safety compliance
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
