Experienced Geotechnical Lab Technician II - Houston, Texas

Professional Service Industries, Inc. (Intertek-PSI) is a leading US based provider of construction assurance, testing and inspection in civil and commercial construction. Our broad service offering includes construction materials testing, geotechnical services, environmental engineering, industrial hygiene, and specialty testing.

What are we looking for?

The Experienced Geotechnical Lab Technician II  is responsible for performing a variety of construction materials testing, project specific observations and site assessment duties under general supervision and/or form detailed controlled procedures.

What you'll do:

  • Operate testing equipment and conduct geotechnical lab testing, (example: Atterberg Limits, Sieve Analysis, Unconfined Compressive (UC) strength test, Triaxial tests (UU, CU), Swell test, permeability tests etc.) independently or with minimum help.
  • Utilize drawings, specifications, and diagrams to complete work
  • Maintain and calibrate standard equipment
  • Maintain detailed documentation and data from test results

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Geology, or a related field is a plus.
  • Minimum 3 years of geotechnical laboratory testing experience; construction field experience alone is not considered equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ASTM soil laboratory testing experience, including one or more of the following: 
    • Atterberg Limits
    • Sieve Analysis
    • Proctor Compaction
    • Unconfined Compression (UC) Strength
    • Triaxial Testing
    • Consolidation Testing
    • Swell Testing
    • Permeability Testing
    • California Bearing Ratio (CBR) Testing
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to work off-shift, overnight hours, and overtime as business needs require.
  • Ability to lift, move, push, and pull 30 to 50 pounds frequently; occasionally over 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to kneel, squat, and climb occasionally and work at various heights.
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including hot and cold temperatures.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and demanding deadlines.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and prioritization skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Customer-focused with a commitment to quality and safety.
  • Ability to travel as business needs dictate.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Preferred Requirements & Qualifications

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in civil engineering technology, Geology, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of geotechnical laboratory testing experience.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO testing procedures in addition to ASTM standards.
  • Experience using geotechnical data management software such as OpenGround, gINT, or similar platforms.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience supporting transportation, infrastructure, commercial, or construction materials testing projects.
