What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Geospatial Software Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geospatial Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or C++), knowledge of GIS principles, spatial databases, and a degree in computer science, geography, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, PostGIS, and relevant certifications (e.g., Esri Technical Certification) are highly valued. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These qualifications ensure accurate spatial analysis, efficient development of geospatial applications, and successful collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

What does a Geospatial Software Engineer do?

A Geospatial Software Engineer develops, maintains, and optimizes software that processes and analyzes geographic data. They work with GIS (Geographic Information Systems), mapping technologies, and spatial databases to build applications for industries like urban planning, environmental science, and logistics. Their role often involves programming, data visualization, and integrating geospatial tools with cloud or web-based platforms. They typically use languages like Python, JavaScript, or C++ and frameworks such as GDAL, PostGIS, or Mapbox.

What are the typical projects or tasks Geospatial Software Engineers work on?

Geospatial Software Engineers commonly work on projects such as developing mapping applications, processing and visualizing spatial data, building location-based services, and integrating geographic data into larger software platforms. Daily tasks may include writing code for spatial data analysis, optimizing database queries, collaborating with GIS analysts and data scientists, and maintaining or improving geospatial data pipelines. Engineers often work in multidisciplinary teams and are involved in both the design and implementation phases of projects. This diverse work helps them gain experience across a wide range of industries, such as urban planning, environmental science, transportation, and defense, offering strong opportunities for career growth.

Job description

The Software Engineer builds, maintains, and supports custom software used by employees, customers, and business partners. This is a full-stack role covering the complete development lifecycle โ€” discovery, planning, design, implementation, testing, release, and production support โ€” across frontend applications, APIs, backend services, databases, and integrations.

AI-assisted engineering is a normal part of how we work. Engineers use AI tools throughout planning, implementation, debugging, testing, review, and documentation, and remain fully accountable for the quality, security, and impact of everything they ship.

This role has a flexible work arrangement, meaning we are open to employees working remotely or in-office. Periodic travel to the Atlanta, IN office is expected.

As a member of the Beckโ€™s Family of employees, all full-time employees are eligible for a generous benefits package:

  • Health benefits including two medical plan options and company HSA contributions, dental, vision, employer paid life/AD&D for you and your dependents, disability insurance, and access to an onsite Nurse Practitioner
  • 401k plan match & company sponsored pension plan and access to a Financial Advisor to help you manage your retirement savings
  • Paid time off, Paid Holidays, Wellness Programs, & Corporate Discounts
  • Company Christmas Party, Free Lunch, Two Hundred Dollar Merchandise Allowance, & Much More

Responsibilities

  • Deliver features end to end, spanning frontend, API, backend services, and database layers โ€” often as coordinated changes across multiple codebases.
  • Plan before coding: define expected behavior, affected systems, test needs, and regression risk.
  • Build frontend workflows, forms, and shared components that are reliable, responsive, and true to approved designs, including mobile and progressive web app experiences.
  • Develop and maintain APIs, backend services, background jobs, and database-backed workflows, including schema changes, stored procedures, and performance-conscious SQL.
  • Contribute to integrations with internal systems and third-party services.
  • Diagnose and fix defects at any layer โ€” UI behavior, API responses, service logic, data, background processing โ€” and participate in production support, staged releases, and hotfixes.
  • Write automated tests that cover expected behavior, edge cases, and regression risk.
  • Review teammates' pull requests regularly and give clear, practical feedback โ€” code review is a core responsibility, not a side task.
  • Help keep our platforms healthy through dependency upgrades, refactoring, tooling improvements, and test coverage growth.
  • Communicate clearly with engineers, QA, Design, Technology Business Partners, and business stakeholders, and document what others will need later.

Job Requirements

 Education and Skills:

  • 2โ€“5 years of professional experience building and supporting production software, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong TypeScript/JavaScript skills and experience with a modern frontend framework such as React or Angular.
  • Experience building or maintaining APIs, backend services, and data-driven applications.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational database design.
  • Fluency with Git workflows, pull requests, code review, automated testing, and agile delivery.
  • Ability to debug problems that cross application layers โ€” UI, API, service logic, database, or background processing.
  • Good judgment when balancing delivery speed, maintainability, user experience, and production stability.
  • AI fluency: effective, responsible use of AI-assisted development tools, with validation of everything they produce.
  • Clear communication with technical and non-technical partners, and a practical interest in solving real business problems with software.
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field preferred, or equivalent practical experience.

Technologies: Not every item is required โ€” breadth and willingness to learn matter more than checking every box.

  • TypeScript, JavaScript, Node.js, and Python
  • React, Angular, Next.js, and modern frontend tooling
  • SQL Server (schema design, stored procedures), MongoDB, and Redis
  • Background job queues, scheduled jobs, and asynchronous processing
  • Mapping and geospatial data libraries
  • Authentication and authorization, feature flags, and headless CMS integrations
  • Report generation and PDF/document rendering
  • CI/CD pipelines, containerized deployments, and logging/monitoring tools
  • GitHub, Jira, and AI-assisted development tools

 Experience:

  • Delivering user-facing features end to end โ€” frontend through API to database โ€” in systems with active users.
  • Supporting production systems: monitoring, triage, hotfixes, and staged release processes.
  • Working with background jobs, queues, and long-running or asynchronous business workflows.
  • Modernizing existing systems โ€” framework and dependency upgrades, refactoring, type-safety and test-coverage improvements โ€” without disrupting current users.
  • Maintaining backwards-compatible API contracts for multiple clients, including web and mobile applications.
  • Moving comfortably between codebases, products, and stacks as team priorities shift.

** In an effort to provide a safer, drug-free workplace for employees, all full-time applicants to whom offers of employment are made must submit to a drug test and background check, subject to applicable local, state, or federal laws or regulations. Employment at Beck's is contingent upon passing these pre-employment screenings.
