Geospatial Software Engineer information

What does a geospatial software engineer do?

A Geospatial Software Engineer develops, maintains, and optimizes software that processes and analyzes geographic data. They work with GIS (Geographic Information Systems), mapping technologies, and spatial databases to build applications for industries like urban planning, environmental science, and logistics. Their role often involves programming, data visualization, and integrating geospatial tools with cloud or web-based platforms. They typically use languages like Python, JavaScript, or C++ and frameworks such as GDAL, PostGIS, or Mapbox.

What are the typical projects or tasks geospatial software engineers work on?

Geospatial Software Engineers commonly work on projects such as developing mapping applications, processing and visualizing spatial data, building location-based services, and integrating geographic data into larger software platforms. Daily tasks may include writing code for spatial data analysis, optimizing database queries, collaborating with GIS analysts and data scientists, and maintaining or improving geospatial data pipelines. Engineers often work in multidisciplinary teams and are involved in both the design and implementation phases of projects. This diverse work helps them gain experience across a wide range of industries, such as urban planning, environmental science, transportation, and defense, offering strong opportunities for career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a geospatial software engineer?

To thrive as a Geospatial Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or C++), knowledge of GIS principles, spatial databases, and a degree in computer science, geography, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, PostGIS, and relevant certifications (e.g., Esri Technical Certification) are highly valued. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These qualifications ensure accurate spatial analysis, efficient development of geospatial applications, and successful collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Manage multiple concurrent projects from assessment through production deployment and sustaining engineering

Job description

About The Weather Company:
The Weather Company is the world's leading weather provider, helping people and businesses make more informed decisions and take action in the face of weather. Together with advanced technology and AI, The Weather Company's high-volume weather data, insights, advertising, and media solutions across the open web help people, businesses, and brands around the world prepare for and harness the power of weather in a scalable, privacy-forward way. The world's most accurate forecaster globally, the company reaches hundreds of enterprise clients and more than 360 million monthly active users via its digital properties from The Weather Channel (weather.com) and Weather Underground (wunderground.com).
AI is part of how we work:Human judgment, expertise, and creativity remain essential and are amplified by AI. We expect everyone in this role to use AI thoughtfully and proactively to accelerate their performance, improve the quality of their work, and explore new possibilities. We are looking for people who are curious, adaptable, and excited to help shape an AI-enabled culture that delivers better outcomes for our customers and our company.
Job brief:
The Weather Company's Spatial Data Services (SSDS) team is the backbone of data visualization across our entire platform. We operate one of the largest geospatial tech stacks in the industry - over 100 services delivering thousands of layers of geospatial and weather imagery data to hundreds of millions of users, enterprise partners, and mission-critical clients including major OEMs and aviation carriers.
We're looking for a hands-on Senior Software Engineer who can co-design, build, manage, sustain and rapidly evolve cloud-based technology solutions in an operational environment. We expect this individual to support the architecture of AI workflows and leverage cutting-edge tools with discernment and influence - often across multiple projects simultaneously. You will aggressively evaluate AI capabilities in partnership with science and technology colleagues while deploying these in trustworthy ways, knowing when AI adds value. The role requires the individual to ship with AI at their side - someone who treats AI coding assistants as a core part of their workflow, not an afterthought. You'll work on a small, high-ownership team where your contributions directly shape how the world sees and interacts with weather data.
The impact you'll make:
  • Champion thoughtful AI adoption, helping teams embrace intelligent automation while maintaining trust and reliability
  • Modernize select legacy systems by proposing sustainable replacements when they block automation opportunities
  • Influence technical direction across SSDS development and operational support teams beyond your direct scope
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects, supporting the advancement of 3-5+ initiatives from assessment through production deployment and sustaining engineering
  • Design, build, and maintain high-scale services that ingest, store, transform, and distribute geospatially referenced data in a cloud environment
  • Drive innovation in how consumer, aviation, and B2B datasets are visualized and delivered
  • Support and evolve internal tooling that enables sellers, product owners, and support teams to access and expand the SSDS product catalog
  • Contribute to cost optimization, security compliance, and platform reliability across a large distributed service fleet
  • Use AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Cursor, or equivalent) daily as a force multiplier in your engineering workflow
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, operations, and external enterprise clients

What you've accomplished:
  • Demonstrated daily use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, or similar)
  • 5-8+ years of software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend systems hosted in cloud (AWS strongly preferred)
  • Geospatial data experience - worked with spatial data systems, tile serving, coordinate systems, or related tooling in a production environment
  • Production software delivery across the full lifecycle from design to deployment to support of large-scale distributed systems
  • 24x7 operational environments - worked with mission-critical systems where trustworthiness and reliability matter
  • Multi-project execution - successfully supported 3-5+ concurrent technical initiatives to completion
  • LLM and modern AI integration - practical experience with APIs, prompt engineering, RAG, agentic workflows, or similar capabilities
  • Production-level proficiency in Java or GoLang
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working in a high-ownership environment

TWCo Benefits/Perks:
  • Flexible Time Off program
  • Hybrid work model
  • Variety of medical insurance options including a $0 cost premium employee coverage
  • Benefits effective day 1 of employment include competitive 401K match with no vesting requirement, national health, dental, and vision plans
  • Progressive family plan benefits
  • An opportunity to work for a global and industry-leading technology company
  • Impactful work in a collaborative environment
