GEOSPATIAL SERVICE LINE
POSITION SUMMARY
Spicer Group is seeking an energetic and highly motivated Survey Crew Chief to join our Michigan West surveying operations. This is a unique opportunity that requires an individual with experience and understanding of construction surveying and design surveying projects. This person must be driven, hardworking and highly motivated. Support will be provided to leverage and help grow the surveying practice using the latest in surveying technology, including UAS, mobile LiDAR, static laser scanning, single and multibeam sonar, metrology and industrial measurement tools, and the very latest in robotics and GNSS surveying. This is a long-term career opportunity within our Michigan West surveying team.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides technical support working independently but under limited direction of Staff Surveyors, Project Surveyors, Regional Survey Manager or Geospatial Director
  • Provides direction and guidance to technicians, and directs the field survey activities for small and large projects under minimal supervision of a senior staff member
  • Adheres to established company policies, follows all Geospatial Service Line procedures, and assures the crew follows standard procedures
  • Performs field survey activities in accordance with standards set by the company, state statutes, and the surveying industry best practices
  • Discusses job assignments with clients, contractors, and other external sources
  • Responsible for the organization of job files for data storage, field notes, reports, and drawings
  • Performs trigonometry, geometry, algebra, coordinate geometry and various surveying computations
  • Operates and has knowledge of GNSS and robotic total station functions and capabilities
  • Good understanding of leveling practices, allowable closures, loop constraints, balancing and best industry practices
  • Assures crew adheres to procedures in the safety manual and uses all personal safety equipment provided
  • Plans daily activities considering possible multiple project schedules to ensure efficient completion of the work
  • Maintains assigned vehicle and survey equipment to ensure everything is kept neat, clean and in top working condition
  • Communicate with the entire crew and office staff about all aspects of the project and progress
  • Works without direct day-to-day supervision and makes technical and supervisory decisions for projects assigned within specified limits of authority
  • Prepares daily timesheets, data logs, topographic and staking reports, and manages field change orders
  • Provides input to Supervisor and Service Line Director for the formal performance evaluation of crew members under responsible charge
  • Able to work independently, when appropriate using robotic instruments and GNSS
  • Participates in Geospatial Service Line and/or crew training
  • Able to perform physically demanding work in all types of weather

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Survey Technician Level II or III (CST III)
  • Advanced knowledge of the Crew Chief role
  • Ability to effectively lead and direct a group of survey technicians
  • Strong communication skills, works well with staff and clients
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in all type of weather
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without a reasonable accommodation
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 4+ years experience working as a crew chief/party chief
  • Associates degree or Engineering/Surveying related college courses a plus
