What is the difference between Geospatial Analytics vs GIS Analyst?
| Aspect | Geospatial Analytics | GIS Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Geography, GIS, or related field; proficiency in spatial analysis tools | Bachelor's in Geography, GIS, or related field; GIS certifications often preferred |
| Work Environment | Data analysis, modeling, and visualization in offices or remote settings | Map creation, data management, and spatial data editing in GIS software environments |
| Industry Usage | Used across industries like urban planning, environmental science, and transportation for data-driven decisions | Primarily in government agencies, consulting firms, and environmental organizations for mapping and data management |
While both roles involve spatial data, Geospatial Analytics focuses on analyzing and interpreting geographic data to derive insights, whereas a GIS Analyst primarily manages and creates geographic information systems and maps. Both roles often overlap but serve different core functions within the geospatial industry.

Job description
Founded in 1989, SOSi is among the largest private, founder-owned technology and services integrators in the defense and government services industry. We deliver tailored solutions, tested leadership, and trusted results to enable national security missions worldwide.
**This position is contingent upon contract award**
SOSi is seeking a Mid-Level Geospatial Research Analyst to support mission requirements for a structured approach to further develop, integrate, and sustain a scalable, federated data ecosystem that enhances interoperability, governance, and mission-driven analytics for a DoD customer. The primary objective of the program is to bridge the operational gaps between DoD, IC, interagency, and non-traditional international partners to enable real-time information sharing, dynamic data integration, and mission-tailored analytical capabilities.
Essential Job Duties:
- Support geospatial data collection, curation, and analysis, ensuring research outputs align with mission objectives.
- Apply geospatial analytical techniques, including spatial modeling, remote sensing interpretation, and GIS-based risk assessments.
- Document and validate geospatial data sources, ensuring alignment with metadata governance and interoperability standards.
- Contribute to the Geospatial Research Insights Report, detailing analytical methodologies and operational applications of geospatial intelligence.
Minimum Requirements:
- Active TOP SECRET Clearance.
- Bachelor's degree in Geography, Geospatial Science, GIS, Remote Sensing, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Business Analytics or a closely related field; or
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience creating geospatial analytic products in these fields of study or supporting DoD geospatial and all-source analysis and production, including supervising analysis, research, and production.
- Proposed personnel possess the expertise, knowledge, and capability to both apply and lead geospatial analytics and all-source intelligence methodologies, theories, and frameworks; and AI/ML, data quality, enrichment, and stewardship processes and techniques to research to:
- Develop geospatial and all-source intelligence analytic products.
- Conduct data stewardship techniques best practices.
- Collaborate with other data providers and analysts to produce and curate country and regional pages on program.
- Engage and collaborate with customers to understand analytic requirements.
- Working knowledge of Esri ArcGIS Enterprise systems and data steward tools, catalogs, techniques, and processes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certifications or training in Esri GIS or related technologies (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS REST API), Python, R, JSON, HTML/XML, SQL, NoSQL, PostgreSQL, Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT), and All-Source Intelligence analytic methodology are advantageous but not required.
Work Environment
- Normal office conditions.
