About the position

This role is field-based and involves conducting on-site investigations to identify, designate, and map underground utilities using geophysical locating equipment. The SUE Analyst will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and efficient utility data collection for engineering and construction projects. The SUE Analyst is a leader for the field crew(s) and supports department manager in managing, developing and coordinating field crew(s).

Essential functions:

  • Conduct utility designation, verification, and mapping using electromagnetic (EM) locators, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and other geophysical tools.

  • Perform field investigations to identify and classify underground utilities per ASCE 38-22 standards.

  • Operate and maintain subsurface utility locating equipment and GPS data collection devices.

  • Work alongside survey crews to collect and integrate SUE data into project deliverables.

  • Provide real-time field documentation, sketches, and reports for utility data findings.

  • Lead projects with vacuum excavation (potholing) to expose utilities when necessary.

  • Communicate with project managers, surveyors, engineers, and utility owners regarding utility conflicts and findings.

  • Provide mentorship and professional development to junior field employees.

  • Ensure field safety compliance, following OSHA and company safety protocols.

  • Troubleshooting complex issues in the field.

  • Managing project resources effectively.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma required; technical training or an associate’s degree in surveying, GIS, or civil engineering is a plus.

  • 5+ years of field experience in utility locating, surveying, or subsurface utility engineering.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites.
