How much do geophysics jobs pay per hour?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the geophysics position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Geophysicist, you need a solid background in earth sciences, mathematics, and physics, typically supported by a relevant degree such as geology, geophysics, or a related field. Familiarity with seismic data analysis software, GIS tools, and geophysical field equipment (like gravimeters and magnetometers) is often required, as well as specific certifications for fieldwork or data interpretation. Strong analytical abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help Geophysicists excel in multidisciplinary project environments. These technical and interpersonal skills are crucial for accurately interpreting data, collaborating with diverse teams, and delivering actionable insights in exploration or environmental projects.
What does a geophysicist do?
What is geophysics?
A geophysics job involves studying the physical properties of the Earth using methods such as seismic, magnetic, electrical, and gravitational analysis. Geophysicists work in various fields, including oil and gas exploration, environmental studies, mining, and natural hazard assessment. They use advanced technology and mathematical models to interpret subsurface structures and processes. Their work helps industries locate resources, assess geological hazards, and better understand Earth’s dynamics.
What careers are in geophysics?
What are the typical work environments and daily tasks for a geophysicist?
Geophysicists often split their time between office-based data analysis and fieldwork, depending on the stage of a project. In the office, you might use advanced software to interpret seismic, magnetic, or gravitational data, create maps, and prepare technical reports. Fieldwork may involve deploying instruments, collecting samples, and monitoring conditions at exploration or environmental sites. You will frequently collaborate with geologists, engineers, and project managers to ensure the accuracy and applicability of your findings. This blend of analytical and hands-on work makes the role dynamic and offers opportunities for both independent and team-based projects.

Job description
We are looking for the right people - people who want to innovate, achieve, grow and lead. We attract and retain the best talent by investing in our employees and empowering them to develop themselves and their careers. Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world's largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.
You will focus on building the visualization layer for next-generation geoscience applications. This role is centered on displaying, exploring, and interacting with large-scale scientific datasets within modern web applications.
You will work closely with front-end engineers, AI engineers, and domain experts to develop high-performance visualization capabilities that allow users to interact with millions of data points in real time. You will help design and implement rendering systems, data processing pipelines, and visualization frameworks that transform complex geoscience data into interactive visual experiences.
You will build software for the following domain:
- Geoscience - geology, geophysics, or petrophysics
Technologies used vary by team and include:
- TypeScript, JavaScript, C++, and Python
- Angular, React, and Node.js
- WebGL, WebGPU, Three.js, deck.gl, D3.js, Cesium, or similar visualization frameworks
- Cloud platforms including Azure and AWS
Containerization and orchestration tooling such as Docker and Kubernetes
- Design and implement high-performance visualization components for complex scientific and engineering datasets
- Build rendering systems capable of displaying and interacting with millions of points, vectors, surfaces, or spatial objects
- Design interaction models for zooming, filtering, selection, annotation, and navigation of large datasets
- Optimize visualization performance across CPU, GPU, and memory
- Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate implementation, debugging, performance tuning, and test generation for visualization components
- Evaluate emerging AI-assisted approaches for visualization generation, interaction design, and data exploration
- Collaborate with UI engineers to integrate visualizations into application workflows
- Develop efficient client-side data structures, indexing strategies, and pipelines
- Evaluate and integrate visualization libraries, rendering frameworks, and graphics technologies where appropriate
- Apply secure coding practices and participate in code reviews
- Communicate clearly across a distributed, cross time zone team
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Graphics, Visualization, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of software development experience
- Strong understanding of computer graphics fundamentals, rendering pipelines, shaders, and GPU programming concepts
- Experience developing interactive 2D and 3D visualization for Scientific application or Games.
- Experience working with large datasets using Level-of-Detail (LOD), streaming, caching, and performance optimization techniques.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Experience profiling and optimizing rendering and application performance
- Experience displaying and interacting with very large datasets in web applications
- Experience with GPU-accelerated rendering technologies such as WebGL, WebGPU, Three.js, deck.gl, Cesium, or similar frameworks
- Experience optimizing rendering performance, memory consumption, and application responsiveness
- Experience developing interactive visualizations involving panning, zooming, selection, filtering, layering, or spatial navigation
- Experience profiling and troubleshooting performance issues in modern browsers
- Experience consuming APIs and streaming large datasets to client applications
- Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical trade-offs to teammates and stakeholders
- Experience using AI development tools in an effective and productive fashion
- Experience with scientific visualization, GIS, CAD, E&P, engineering, or simulation software
- Experience working with point clouds, 2D/3D geometry, meshes, raster data, or spatial data structures
- Experience with WebGPU and modern browser graphics pipelines
Experience with cloud-native development including containers and Kubernetes
Candidates having qualifications that exceed the minimum job requirements will receive consideration for higher level roles given (1) their experience, (2) additional job requirements, and/or (3) business needs. Depending on education, experience, and skill level, a variety of job opportunities might be available, Principal Software Development, and Technical Advisor Software Development.
The engineer who succeeds in this role brings independent judgment to their work and applies it consistently. You own your assignments end to end, communicate clearly when something is off track, and treat code reviews as a genuine quality tool rather than a formality. You are comfortable working across time zones, adaptable when requirements shift, and focused on delivery outcomes rather than task completion. You pick up new tools and techniques on your own, evaluate them critically, and bring the ones that work to your team. You help the engineers around you improve because you understand that team quality compounds over time.
Why Landmark
We build small, high-ownership teams and invest in the quality of every person on them. You will work in a business where software is the product, the work you do matters, and the standards are high. You will own real work that ships, learn from engineers who push you, and grow into the kind of engineer the team relies on.
We offer competitive compensation, a strong career path, and a role where you own what you build, and your impact is visible.
