Duties
Under general direction, the Lab Technician is responsible for the performance of those tasks involved with laboratory activities . The Lab Technician is dedicated to the learning college concepts by developing programs and facilitating activities that promote student success and lifelong learning. General Laboratory activities may include purchasing supplies, responding to faculty requests, maintaining inventory, organizing and tracking of material, and maintaining safe, clean organized environments, and other duties as assigned.
Specific essential duties and responsibilities for Cross-Disciplinary Lab Technician may include the following :
1. Perform general essential duties and responsibilities of the Lab Technician in non-specialty areas such as Environmental Science, Geology, Earth Science, Physics, and Physical Science (areas excluding General Biology, A&P/Microbiology, and Chemistry)
2. Perform all general essential duties and responsibilities of subject area lab specialties as needed and during absence of the subject area Lab Technician
3. Supervision of student employees of subject area lab specialties as needed and performance of specific essential duties of subject area lab specialties as appropriate.
4. Facilitate and maintain the Nature Study Area including the renewal of contract of restoration company as well as hands on work.
5. Schedule and assist with DI tank replacement through Nalco Ecolab.
6. Assist Skyway STEM mentors and students with projects and laboratory supply needs.
Education/Experience
Associate's degree and 1-3 years related work experience in a laboratory environment required. Demonstrated relevant science coursework and/or research experience in science related to the position.
Qualifications
In addition to the above requirements, the following qualifications are sought:
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos;
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to communicate information with individuals both inside and outside the college;
  • Effective interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment;
  • Ability to operate a computer and necessary software needed to perform duties;
  • Able to work overtime as needed to ensure the needs of labs or lab animals are met as applicable.

Preferred:
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures/specimen management; ability to apply safe/compliant practices/protocols, ability to identify laboratory hazards and implement safety procedures, ability to support faculty and students in the lab, ability maintain accurate records and work collaboratively.

Work Conditions
The employee may occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, airborne particles, odors, and cleaning or maintenance chemicals while performing assigned duties. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position. This role requires regular standing, walking, reaching, manual dexterity, and communication abilities. Occasional climbing, balancing, and other physical activities may be required. The position may require lifting/moving items weighing up to 100 pounds. Close vision and the ability to adjust focus are necessary
