Job description

Position Description: Stratum Group is seeking a full-time, entry-level geologist to join our geology services team. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest and aptitude for applied geology, particularly in the context of geologic hazards (e.g., landslides, debris flows, tsunamis, channel migration, shoreline erosion, etc.). The ideal candidate will also be willing and able to work outside throughout the year in inclement weather and on uneven and challenging terrain.

The position will primarily involve completing geologic hazard and geotechnical assessments to inform residential and small commercial development. Project work will include office review of available remotely sensed information (e.g., lidar imagery and aerial photographs) and previously prepared materials or documents (e.g., reports, studies, field notes, etc.), completing detailed field evaluations and documentation, client communication, and technical report writing.

Training under licensed engineering geologists will be provided to develop the skills necessary to eventually perform the job duties with reduced supervision. Geologist and Engineering Geologist licensure is expected to be obtained by the applicant upon completion of requisite work experience.

  • Ability to perform physical duties including, but not limited to, lifting, traversing rough terrain, and digging hand dug test pits.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and clearly communicate ideas and technical concepts (verbally and in writing)
  • Ability to work both independently with little guidance and within a collaborative group environment
  • Good driving record and willingness to drive company or personal vehicle to job sites
  • Willingness to occasionally work long days (10-12 hours) travel as needed (<5% overnight)

Preferred Requirements

  • Master’s degree in geology with a focus on engineering geology and/or geologic hazards or two years of relevant work experience

  • Proficiency in GIS
  • Interest in regional geologic hazard policy

Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation ($62,000 to $70,000 per year)
  • Employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Excellent retirement plan with both stand-alone employer contribution as well as employer matching to encourage employee contribution
