We currently have an exciting opportunity at our Pogo operation for an experienced Underground Mine Surveyor/Survey Technician on a 15 days on, 13 days off schedule.

What's the role?

The Project Resource Geologist reports to the Senior Resource Geologist, and the primary role is to assist in the implementation and execution of geological tasks related to the operation of the Underground Mine. This position must make on the spot decisions with little consultation to more senior staff which can effect ongoing drilling or modelling activities. They are also responsible for the generation and timely delivery of high quality grade control and resource models. As well as, complete tasks allocated by the Senior Resource Development Geologist, with some framework provided, but it will be up to the incumbent to devise a plan, carry out the task and deliver the results. The incumbent must be capable, highly motivated self-starter.

Specific Requirements:

  • Dependent upon area of responsibility, tasks will be assigned by the Senior Resource Geologist or Alternate. These will relate to:
    • Generating Resource and Grade Control models.
    • Report writing.
    • QA/QC monitoring.
    • Core logging.
    • Project work as assigned.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the various software packages:
    • General Microsoft Office packages.
    • Vulcan and/or other 3D mining software.Deliver grade control and resource models with associated documentation.
  • Deliver grade control and resource models with associated documentation. This includes interpretation, development of geology wireframes, ore body modelling, data management, estimation and comprehensive documentation of the processes.
  • Liaise with drilling geologists and Senior Mine Geologist to ensure drilling and mapping is planned and scheduled in order to allow timely delivery of estimations to meet operational and Northern Star corporate reserve deadlines.
  • Review project areas to identify resource extension opportunities and additional resources, assist drilling geologists with any additional drilling required.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with drill and blast staff and mine planning engineers to ensure that models are delivered to meet operational requirements.
  • Prior to modelling, review relevant underground mapping and sampling for quality and provide feedback.
  • Interpret and validate the geology and assay value results to guarantee integrity and reliability of the geological database.
  • Active participation in all QA/QC programs including lab audits. Monitor and produce relevant reports on QA/QC performance of assay labs and other data sources to ensure accurate records are maintained for all resource evaluation activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and statutory requirements in order to minimise Northern Star’s risk exposure and liabilities.
  • Be a key member in the design and development og Standard Operating Procedures for resource development activities. Ensure accurate reporting of instructions, continuous improvement initiatives and delivery of results are readily available to all staff.
  • Drive ongoing geological improvement by analysing existing processes and implementing enhancements.
  • Continually develop your personal technical skills and supervisory skills to ensure that your knowledge and skills and those of your team remain relevant and efficient.
  • Schedule time and allocate resources to ensure that you monitor recent developments in your areas of responsibility so that you can investigate relevant new techniques and promote change within the Geology Department.
  • Develop and implement competency assessment programs with your direct report/s to conform to the Northern Star technical development initiative.

Qualifications Required:

  • Degree in Geology or equivalent field.
  • Relevant tertiary studies, preferably with mine site exposure.
  • Experience in the use of Geological Software (Vulcan, Datamine or similar).
  • Computer literacy – Microsoft Office.
  • Current Driver’s Licence.
  • Ability to pass a background check and post-offer physical.

Desired Experience & Competencies:

  • Minimum 3 years geological experience in the mining industry, the majority of which is preferably in gold.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain or exceed best industry practice in all geological and environmental tasks.
  • Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
  • Awareness of the Mine Safety and Inspection Act & Regulations

The Details:

Working a 15 days on, 13 days off, off rotating schedule of days and nights, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, internet & cable tv programs. Cell service is available when using Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
