Job description

Staff Geologist – Geotechnical Drilling Operations
Location: Columbus, Ohio (Limited Overnight Travel)
Compensation: $24–$28/hour (Based on Experience)
Employment Type: Full-Time | Field & Office Hybrid

Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Geologist to support geotechnical drilling operations throughout Central Ohio.
This role works closely with drill crews and project managers to oversee subsurface investigations, log soil and rock samples, and ensure accurate and compliant field data collection. The ideal candidate enjoys fieldwork, technical analysis, and collaboration in a fast-paced consulting environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide field oversight of geotechnical drilling operations
  • Log and classify soil and rock samples in accordance with ASTM standards and project specifications
  • Monitor drilling procedures to ensure quality, safety, and regulatory compliance
  • Collect, document, and manage subsurface data and field records
  • Coordinate with drillers, engineers, and project managers regarding site conditions
  • Assist with well installations, test pits, and environmental sampling as required
  • Prepare field reports, boring logs, and supporting technical documentation
  • Travel daily to job sites within a one-hour radius of Columbus; occasional overnight travel may be required
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Earth Science, or a related field
  • 0–3+ years of experience in geotechnical, environmental, or field geology (entry-level candidates encouraged to apply)
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and field data software
  • Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation
  • Ability to perform moderate physical activity and work extended hours as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with geotechnical drilling and subsurface investigations
  • Familiarity with ASTM soil classification and logging procedures
  • Experience preparing boring logs and geotechnical reports
  • OSHA 10/30 certification
  • EIT or GIT certification (or progress toward professional licensure)
  • Experience with groundwater monitoring wells and environmental sampling
Work Environment
  • Combination of outdoor fieldwork and office-based reporting
  • Exposure to weather, dust, mud, noise, and active construction environments
  • Collaborative, team-oriented field setting
  • Primarily local projects with limited overnight travel
