Geographic Information Systems Technician

Coates Field Service, Inc. is seeking an experienced Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician. The successful candidates will have advance experience in GIS data management, generation, spatial analysis, map creation, reporting, and workflow.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensures database remains highly accurate, current, and reliable as the operational system of record
  • Maintain and update all GIS layers and attribute data within ArcGIS Enterprise, ensuring compliance with internal data standards and operational requirements.
  • Reconcile discrepancies between systems, including geometry mismatches, attribute conflicts, and schema variations.
  • Develop, revise, and maintain GIS datasets, maps, sketches, and technical drawings.
  • Capture, edit, and integrate spatial data including land parcels, environmental layers, easements, field locations, and operational assets.
  • Interpret field notes, marked drawings, digital sketches, and communications to update GIS layers.
  • Obtains information required to perform work from multiple resources including verbal/electronic communications, sketches, marked drawings, field notes, and technical reference manuals
  • Develops, assembles, edits, and revises maps and map products using GIS concepts, principles, and processes
  • Create high‑quality web maps, diagrams, and data visualizations in support of operations, engineering, planning, and land management functions.
  • Designs and runs queries and reports defined to pull data from geographical and non-geographical databases
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered
  • 3–7 years of professional GIS experience, preferably in utilities, energy,
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS desktop and extensions

Preferred Skills

  • Strong proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise/Portal, ArcGIS Online, and spatial data management workflows.
  • Experience working with or supporting work management systems such as Irth (preferred) or similar platforms.
  • Ability to interpret field notes, survey documents, parcel descriptions, and engineering sketches.
  • Familiarity with Municipal Parcel boundary definitions and landowner information.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and able to collaborate with team members
  • Provide advanced user support for GIS-related workflows, troubleshooting issues related to mapping, data entry, or system functionality.
  • High attention to detail while working in a fast-paced environment
  • High‑quality maps and analysis products are delivered to support operational decisions.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Issues are quickly diagnosed and resolved through strong GIS knowledge and decision skills.
  • Experience with utility asset management, land base management, easements, and right‑of‑way data.
  • Experience with advanced GIS editing
  • Ability to multi-task and change workflows based on provided priority areas
  • Experience with geodatabases and the ability to import data, write queries and develop reports
