How much do genotyping jobs pay per hour?

As of May 31, 2026, the average hourly pay for genotyping in the United States is $22.61, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.99 and $24.04 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Genotyping Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Genotyping Specialist, you need a solid background in molecular biology, genetics, and laboratory techniques, often supported by a degree in a life science field. Familiarity with PCR, DNA sequencing platforms, genotyping arrays, and relevant laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong organizational skills are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate genetic analysis, reliable data management, and efficient workflow in research or clinical laboratory settings.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in genotyping laboratories, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in genotyping labs often encounter challenges such as contamination of samples, maintaining high throughput under tight deadlines, and ensuring data accuracy. These issues can be managed by following strict laboratory protocols, using automated systems where possible, and consistently verifying results through quality control measures. Team collaboration is essential, as genotyping projects typically involve coordination with bioinformaticians and researchers to interpret results and troubleshoot technical issues, fostering a dynamic and supportive work environment.

What is genotyping?

Genotyping is the process of determining the genetic makeup of an individual by examining their DNA sequence. This technique identifies differences in the genetic code, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or genetic mutations, which can help in researching genetic diseases, ancestry, and traits. Genotyping is widely used in fields like medicine, agriculture, and biological research to study genetic variation and its impact on health and development.

What is the difference between Genotyping vs Genetic Testing?

AspectGenotypingGenetic Testing
PurposeIdentifies specific genetic variants or alleles in an individualDetects genetic mutations, disorders, or predispositions
MethodsDNA analysis techniques like PCR, SNP analysisSequencing, karyotyping, molecular diagnostics
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, research facilities, biotech companiesMedical labs, hospitals, research institutions
CredentialsBiotech, molecular biology, genetics certificationsMedical licenses, genetic counseling certifications

Genotyping focuses on identifying specific genetic variants, often for research or personalized medicine, while genetic testing detects broader genetic conditions or risks. Both roles require expertise in molecular biology techniques but serve different diagnostic and research purposes.

Genomics AI Program Manager

Full-time

Posted 11 days ago

Job description

The Genomics AI Program Manager will support a Center-wide Initiative at the New York Genome Center (NYGC) focused on advancing the development and application of artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches to genomic interpretation and human disease. The Initiative brings together NYGC faculty, technologists, computational scientists, and external collaborators to develop and apply large-scale AI models that link genomic sequence to cell-type–specific regulation, disease phenotypes, and biological function.

The mission of the Genomics AI Initiative is to address key bottlenecks in genomic interpretation by integrating high-throughput sequencing, single-cell and spatial multiomics, perturbation and functional genomics, and modern machine learning approaches. This effort is inherently interdisciplinary and collaborative, requiring close coordination across scientific domains, data production and infrastructure, and external collaborative partners.

Position Description

The Program Manager will provide coordination and operational leadership across the full range of activities undertaken by the Genomics AI Initiative. This includes day-to-day management of complex, multi-investigator scientific collaborations; coordination of Consortium-wide activities such as working groups, journal clubs, and symposia; development of scientific and programmatic materials; and support for grant and philanthropic proposal development. The Program Manager will play a central role in enabling collaboration across NYGC leadership, faculty, Genomics AI fellows, external collaborators, and commercial partners by tracking scientific progress, facilitating data access and sharing, supporting computational infrastructure planning, and ensuring alignment across teams. This position will report to the Scientific Director & CEO, or an individual designated by the Scientific Director & CEO, and will work closely with the Genomics AI Initiative participants. This role sits at the intersection of genomics, data science, and program coordination and is well-suited for an incumbent adept at working across scientific disciplines and operational functions.

Key Responsibilities

Genomics AI Program Management

  • Manage and coordinate the scientific projects and collaborative activities of the Genomics AI Initiative in alignment with the goals and timelines;

  • Support Genomics AI Initiative leadership in organizing and running working groups, steering committee meetings, journal clubs, workshops, and symposia;

  • Track scientific objectives, milestones, action items, and dependencies across participating labs and teams, and regularly communicate progress to the Genomics AI Initiative leadership;

  • Coordinate the development, review, and dissemination of relevant materials, including presentations, reports, white papers, and scientific summaries;

  • Support development of grant applications, philanthropic proposals, and progress reports in collaboration with faculty, Research Administration, and Development;

  • Facilitate communication across Genomics AI Initiative participants to ensure alignment, transparency, and efficient collaboration; and

  • Organize meetings, prepare agendas and briefing materials, record meeting notes, and track follow-up actions.

Data, Infrastructure, and Computational Coordination

  • Coordinate data sharing, access, and staging across NYGC teams and external collaborators, in partnership with Informatics, IT, and Data Engineering groups;

  • Work with NYGC’s compliance officers and DARB to ensure that data usage is compliant and maintain a list of approved datasets as they relate to AI model development;

  • Serve as a liaison between scientific teams and operational groups to support troubleshooting related to data availability, compute usage, workflows, and analysis pipelines; and

  • Track dataset access and usage, benchmarking activities, and model development milestones across projects.

Genomics AI Initiative Operations and Engagement

  • Support onboarding and coordination of Genomics AI Fellows and participating researchers;

  • Support development of inter-institutional workflows and agreements, including data access and use, collaboration, etc.;

  • Develop and manage annual budgets for Genomics AI Initiative activities and related grant proposals, and monitor expenditures throughout the year to ensure fiscal responsibility and alignment with program priorities;

  • Assist with planning and execution of scientific events and external engagement activities;

  • Help maintain strong working relationships among NYGC faculty, fellows, staff, and external partners; and

  • Contribute to long-term planning for the growth, sustainability, and evaluation of Genomics AI Initiative.
