What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Genomics position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Genomics role, you need a strong background in molecular biology, genetics, and bioinformatics, typically supported by an advanced degree in a life science and relevant laboratory experience. Proficiency with genomic sequencing platforms (such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore), data analysis software, and experience with databases like NCBI or Ensembl are commonly required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and collaborative communication are essential soft skills for interpreting complex data and working within multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are important for ensuring accurate genetic analysis, driving research projects, and making meaningful scientific contributions.

Are geneticists well paid?

Geneticists typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, education, and location. According to industry data, median annual wages for geneticists often range from $60,000 to over $100,000, with those in research or clinical roles earning higher salaries. Advanced skills in laboratory techniques and certifications can also influence earning potential.

What are some careers in genomics?

Careers in genomics include roles such as genomic researcher, bioinformatician, laboratory technician, genetic counselor, and clinical geneticist. These positions often require skills in molecular biology, data analysis, and familiarity with sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools.

What is a Genomics job?

A genomics job involves studying an organism's entire genetic makeup to understand gene functions, interactions, and variations. Professionals in this field work in research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or biotechnology, using advanced tools like sequencing technologies and bioinformatics. Their work can help in disease research, precision medicine, agriculture, and evolutionary biology. Common roles include genomic scientists, bioinformaticians, and clinical geneticists.

What are typical daily responsibilities for someone working in Genomics?

Professionals in Genomics typically spend their days designing experiments, preparing and processing biological samples, and conducting analyses using high-throughput sequencing technologies. They also interpret large datasets using specialized bioinformatics tools, prepare reports or present findings to stakeholders, and collaborate with other scientists such as clinicians, computational biologists, or data analysts. The work environment can be a mix of laboratory work and computational data analysis, depending on the specific position. Regular team meetings and collaboration are common, especially in research or clinical settings where interdisciplinary problem-solving is essential.

Is genomics a good career?

Genomics is a growing field that involves studying an organism's complete set of DNA. Careers in genomics often require strong skills in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and laboratory techniques, with opportunities in research, healthcare, and biotechnology sectors. The field offers competitive salaries and demand for skilled professionals, especially those with advanced degrees and technical expertise.

What are the highest paying jobs in genetics?

Job description

Location: Hybrid-based out of our RTP office, although this role will be to cover the West Coast market.
The Mission: Why We Exist
Genomics is a science-led transatlantic TechBio combining large-scale genetic and health data with proprietary analytics to accelerate drug discovery and advance predictive, preventative healthcare. We are united by a single vision to help people live longer, healthier lives, using the power of genomics.
Genomics aims to help people live longer, healthier lives in two ways: super-charging drug discovery and development for novel treatments with our AI-enabled advanced genetic analytics platform, and by helping people understand their personal risk of common chronic diseases through polygenic risk scores - giving doctors and health systems the chance to get the right people into the right prevention, screening and treatment programmes at the right time.
Role Purpose
As our Associate Director/Director Business Development, you'll be a senior commercial force in the life sciences market - leading high-value, strategic new business for Mystra, our SaaS data and analytics platform, as well as our technology-enabled consultancy business . You'll engage at the most senior levels of pharma and biotech, building the kind of relationships and deals that define Genomics' trajectory.
This is a role for someone with deep commercial instincts, a genuine scientific grounding, and the confidence to operate as a trusted peer to R&D and data leaders at the world's leading pharmaceutical companies. You'll be a key senior individual contributor in a fast-moving Commercial team, and your success will directly shape the future of the business.
A Day in the Life
Strategic New Business: You'll own and drive the most significant new commercial opportunities across pharma and biotech - building multi-stakeholder relationships at senior and executive level and leading complex, high-value sales cycles from first conversation to contract close.
Executive Client Relationships: You'll invest deeply in understanding your clients' long-term R&D and data strategies, positioning Mystra as an essential part of how they work - not just a vendor, but a scientific partner.
Market Leadership: You'll bring a sophisticated view of the life sciences landscape, feeding strategic intelligence back into our go-to-market approach and influencing how we position and evolve our platform.
Sales Operations: You'll set a high standard for pipeline discipline and forecasting, contributing to strategic reporting that informs senior decision-making across the business.
Internal Influence: You'll carry significant internal weight as the voice of the customer - shaping how Product, Science, and Marketing think about the market and ensuring our commercial approach is always grounded in genuine value.
Who You Are
  • You have a substantial track record of senior-level SaaS, digital health, or enterprise technology sales into pharma or biotech, with demonstrable success closing complex, high-value deals.
  • You have deep experience engaging with R&D and research departments inside major pharmaceutical companies, and you navigate senior scientific and commercial stakeholders with ease.
  • You have a strong working knowledge of genetics or genomics - enough to speak credibly and compellingly about what advanced genetic analytics can unlock for drug discovery.
  • You think strategically about markets, clients, and positioning, and bring that perspective into everything you do.
  • You're a self-directed, senior operator who thrives in a fast-paced scale-up environment and doesn't need a roadmap to find the right path.
  • A degree in life sciences, business, or a related field is expected; an advanced degree is a genuine asset.
