Genomics information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Genomics position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Genomics role, you need a strong background in molecular biology, genetics, and bioinformatics, typically supported by an advanced degree in a life science and relevant laboratory experience. Proficiency with genomic sequencing platforms (such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore), data analysis software, and experience with databases like NCBI or Ensembl are commonly required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and collaborative communication are essential soft skills for interpreting complex data and working within multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are important for ensuring accurate genetic analysis, driving research projects, and making meaningful scientific contributions.

What are some careers in genomics?

Careers in genomics include roles such as genomic researcher, bioinformatician, laboratory technician, genetic counselor, and clinical geneticist. These positions often require skills in molecular biology, data analysis, and familiarity with sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools.

What is a Genomics job?

A genomics job involves studying an organism's entire genetic makeup to understand gene functions, interactions, and variations. Professionals in this field work in research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or biotechnology, using advanced tools like sequencing technologies and bioinformatics. Their work can help in disease research, precision medicine, agriculture, and evolutionary biology. Common roles include genomic scientists, bioinformaticians, and clinical geneticists.

Do geneticists get paid well?

Geneticists typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, education, and location. According to industry data, median annual wages for geneticists are generally above the national average for scientific roles, with salaries increasing for those with advanced degrees and specialized skills in laboratory techniques and data analysis.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

In genomics, most roles require at least a degree or specialized training; however, high-paying freelance consulting or sales positions related to biotech products can sometimes reach $10,000 per month without formal degrees. These roles often rely on industry experience, networking, and technical knowledge rather than formal education alone.

What are typical daily responsibilities for someone working in Genomics?

Professionals in Genomics typically spend their days designing experiments, preparing and processing biological samples, and conducting analyses using high-throughput sequencing technologies. They also interpret large datasets using specialized bioinformatics tools, prepare reports or present findings to stakeholders, and collaborate with other scientists such as clinicians, computational biologists, or data analysts. The work environment can be a mix of laboratory work and computational data analysis, depending on the specific position. Regular team meetings and collaboration are common, especially in research or clinical settings where interdisciplinary problem-solving is essential.

What jobs in the US pay 300,000 a year?

In genomics, senior roles such as principal scientists, research directors, or biotech executives can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced degrees, and leadership responsibilities. These positions often require specialized skills, such as bioinformatics, data analysis, and knowledge of laboratory technologies, and are typically found in large biotech or pharmaceutical companies.

Job description

Company Description

The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) is the only nationally recognized medical specialty society in the United States dedicated to the field of medical genetics and genomics. ACMG publishes a family of peer-reviewed journals advancing genomic medicine worldwide.

Job Description

ACMG is seeking an inaugural Editor-in-Chief (EIC) to lead Genetics in Medicine Translational Genomics (GIM TG), a new open access journal launching in 2027. GIM TG is dedicated to translating genomic discoveries into clinical practice and therapeutics, and will serve as a global forum at the interface of genomics and medicine.

GIM TG is an official ACMG journal and companion to Genetics in Medicine and Genetics in Medicine Open. The inaugural EIC will serve alongside the Editors-in-Chief of the companion journals as part of ACMG's integrated publications leadership team.

Journal scope includes:

  • Clinical and translational applications: medical/clinical human genetics, diagnostics, personalized medicine, and pharmacogenomics
  • Therapeutics: gene therapy and gene editing
  • Research and development: preclinical and non-human studies, biotechnology, bioengineering, and technological developments in biological sciences
  • Computational sciences: bioinformatics and related methodologies

The journal will publish Original Research, Reviews, Commentaries, Case Reports, Clinical Utility Studies, and Methods & Protocols, and welcomes Negative Data.

As inaugural EIC, you will shape GIM TG from launch-defining its editorial voice, building its global editorial community, and establishing it as a high-impact, internationally recognized publication. Candidates with strong networks beyond North America are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

Editorial Leadership

  • Refine journal scope in collaboration with ACMG leadership and the publisher
  • Recruit and mentor an international Editorial Board
  • Oversee the peer review process, with the assistance of staff
  • Make final publication decisions
  • Commission content, including Special Issues

Growth and Community Building

  • Promote the journal globally at scientific meetings and through professional networks
  • Attract high-quality international submissions
  • Engage ACMG membership and other stakeholders to grow readership, authorship, and editorial participation - particularly among early career researchers
  • Represent the journal at key conferences

Operational Oversight

  • Monitor key performance metrics, including submissions, decisions, and citations
  • Champion open access, author experience, and accessibility
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Strong scholarly record in translational genomics or a related field
  • Peer-reviewed publishing experience, as an author and/or editor
  • Collaborative leadership style with the ability to build and lead an international team of editors
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate and execute a strategic vision for journal growth and development
  • Commitment to scientific integrity, rigor, and inclusivity in publishing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Editorial experience at a biomedical or genetics journal
  • Active international engagement (Europe, Australia, Asia)
  • Familiarity with open access publishing
  • ACMG membership, or willingness to join
