Job description

Summary

GenomOncology builds the software that clinical and molecular laboratories use to interpret

next-generation sequencing (NGS) results and generate reports that oncologists and

geneticists use to guide patient care.

This role owns product capabilities from discovery through deployment, working with

customers (lab directors, molecular pathologists, or bioinformaticians) to understand their

needs and translate into precise specifications that our product development team can build

โ€“ overseeing the entire process: Design, Development, Testing, Deployment, and Support.

You'll balance clinical correctness, usability, technical complexity, and implementation effort

to arrive at solutions that deliver value for both our customers and our platform. You are the

person who understands both the science and the software well enough to bridge the gap

between them.

This is a senior, high-leverage position. You will not be writing production code or executing a

predefined checklist. You will be figuring out what should be built and how it should behave, in

a domain where the โ€œright answerโ€ is often something you must reason your way to. This is a

handsโ€‘on product role: you'll live in the specifications and acceptance criteria, not just the

roadmap.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys untangling complex technical and scientific

problems, works comfortably across engineering and clinical domains, and wants to define

how software behaves rather than implement the code itself.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Designing new product capabilities for complex clinical genomics workflows where existing software patterns often don't apply. Variant interpretation logic, clinical report structure, knowledge representation, interoperability with EHRs and lab systems. Areas where thereโ€™s rarely an off-the-shelf pattern to copy.
  • Sitting with clients (lab directors, pathologists, bioinformaticians) to understand what they truly need, which is usually different from what they first ask for, and translating that into specifications that engineering can build without guessing.
  • Owning product requirements throughout the feature lifecycleโ€”from customer discovery and design through validation, release, and postโ€‘deployment refinement.
  • Reasoning about complex data end to end: what comes out of a sequencing pipeline, how it should be annotated, filtered, interpreted, and rendered, and where the edge cases hide.
  • Writing precise specifications and automated validation tests that pin down exactly how a feature must behave, including the cases everyone else forgets.
  • Making judgment calls on ambiguous problems and defending them, then adjusting when the evidence says youโ€™re wrong.
  • Coordinating troubleshooting across product and operations teams when something behaves unexpectedly across our client deployments.
  • Mentoring junior members of the team and raising the technical bar of the team.
Who weโ€™re looking for
  • Genetics fluency. A working knowledge of genetics. You should be comfortable with variants, nomenclature, and how genetic findings map to clinical meaning.
  • Bioinformatics literacy. Enough understanding of sequencing pipelines and genomic data (alignment, variant calling, annotation, the shape of a VCF file) to reason confidently about the data, even though you wonโ€™t be building pipelines yourself.
  • Software development process, from the design side. Youโ€™ve worked inside a real SDLC and can write specifications, define test cases, think in systems, and collaborate with engineers as a peer. Again: this is a design and architecture role not a developer role, but you must be able to speak the language.
  • Raw problemโ€‘solving ability. You pick up unfamiliar technical domains fast, reason from first principles when thereโ€™s no playbook, stay productive in ambiguity, and can hold a complicated system in your head and identify the details that matter.
  • Systems thinking. Able to understand complex interactions across laboratory workflows, genomic data, clinical interpretation, software architecture, and user experience, and design solutions that work as a coherent whole.
Nice to have
  • Exposure to clinical genomics software, especially tertiary analysis of tumor sequencing or hereditary NGS
  • Familiarity with variant interpretation frameworks (AMP/ASCO/CAP, ACMG) or knowledgeโ€‘base curation.
  • Any regulatory exposure (CLIA/CAP, FDA) relevant to clinical software.
What this role is not
  • It is not a software development position: you wonโ€™t be writing or maintaining production code.
  • It is not a business analyst role where requirements are simply documented. You'll be expected to shape product behavior, resolve ambiguity, and make informed technical and clinical design decisions. The role involves both strategic judgement as well as handsโ€‘on product work and highly technical detail.
Education
  • PhD or Masterโ€™s Degree in a relevant field is desired
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience will also be considered
Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in application implementation, solution design, software
  • configuration, business analysis, quality assurance, technical consulting, or customerfacing technical (nonโ€‘coding) roles within an SDLC environment.
  • Experience owning product requirements throughout the feature lifecycleโ€”from
  • customer discovery and design through validation, release, and postโ€‘deployment
  • refinement.
  • Experience in clinical diagnostics, molecular biology, genomics, healthcare software,
  • or laboratory information systems.
