Job description
We are seeking a full time, energetic, efficient, and detail-oriented individual to fill a reproductive genetic counseling position serving a high-volume and diverse patient population. Responsibilities will include providing preconception and prenatal genetic counseling services to patients who are referred for a broad range of clinical indications including advanced maternal age, abnormal maternal serum screening or abnormal NIPT results, ultrasound anomalies, an increased risk to have a child with a gene, chromosome, or multifactorial disorder, positive personal and/or family history of genetic disease, positive carrier screening results and teratogen exposures. Comprehensive risk assessment is performed and the benefits, limitations, and risks of invasive and non-invasive test options as well as pre-implantation genetic screening/diagnosis and alternative reproductive options (such as gamete donor and adoption) are discussed as clinically indicated. This individual will be joining an experienced and cohesive team consisting of several reproductive genetic counselors and Clinical Geneticists who work closely together daily at Mount Sinai (main campus).
Responsibilities
- Provide direct counseling services and education to patients who are pregnant/planning to become pregnant regarding the following issues: teratogen exposures, abnormal ultrasound findings, abnormal blood test results, positive carrier status, advanced maternal/paternal age, personal, pregnancy, and/or family history of a complex trait, single gene disorder, or chromosome abnormality, multi-fetal pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, non-invasive and invasive prenatal testing options, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, sperm and ovum donation, etc.
- Provide counseling, continuity of care and appropriate follow-up genetic counseling services as needed via hybrid model including both in-person office visits, and some telehealth visits. Some counseling services via telehealth visits to be conducted from HIPAA compliant home location as needed and is subject to change.
- Supervise Master's level genetic counseling students, as well as fellows, residents, medical students during their clinical reproductive counseling rotations.
- Write chart notes, patient summary letters, and/or physician consultation letters.
- Assist administrative assistants with the proper and timely scheduling of patients. i.e. determine whether an appropriate referral has been made and ensure that patients are seen as quickly as possible by an appropriate genetic counselor/physician as indicated.
- Report and interpret carrier and prenatal screening/testing results for physicians and their patients.
- Field numerous daily telephone calls from physicians who are seeking guidance about the appropriate management of their patients. Issues that are commonly addressed: interpretation of test results, obstetric and/or genetic issues of concern identified within pregnancy, medical and/or family histories, the availability of carrier screening, NIPT and/or diagnostic testing options, whether genetic counseling/testing is medically indicated, and basic information about rare and common genetic/chromosome disorders.
- Coordinate specimen retrieval, shipping, tracking, and/or billing issues for specialized diagnostic testing at outside laboratories (such as testing for single gene disorders such as Noonan syndrome, skeletal dysplasia, WES, WGS).
- Facilitate communication between diagnostic laboratories (cytogenetic, molecular, and biochemical) and referring doctors. Duties include providing patients and physicians with normal, inconclusive, and/or abnormal test results, recommending, and arranging for appropriate follow-up testing and/or counseling, clarifying specimen requirements, and relaying billing information. This applies to patients who have been seen by our clinical staff and patients who have yet to be referred to our institution.
- Provide targeted genetics education to medical/graduate students, residents, and other learners.
Qualifications
- 2 years of genetic counseling experience; 5 or more years of experience is preferred.
- American Board of Genetic Counseling Certification within 3 years of graduation from Genetic Counseling Program.
- Bi-lingual Spanish preferred.
