They apply techniques such as CRISPR and gene cloning in fields like medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology. Their work can lead to advancements like disease-resistant crops, gene therapies, and bioengineered medicines.

Is genetics a high paying job?

Genetic engineering is generally considered a high-paying field, especially for those with advanced degrees and specialized skills in molecular biology, laboratory techniques, and bioinformatics. Salaries can vary based on experience, location, and industry, with roles in research, biotech, and pharmaceuticals often offering competitive compensation. However, entry-level positions may have lower salaries compared to experienced roles in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Genetic Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Genetic Engineer, you need a solid background in molecular biology, genetics, and biotechnology, typically supported by a relevant degree such as biology or bioengineering. Experience with tools like CRISPR, PCR, DNA sequencing technologies, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is highly valued, along with certifications in laboratory safety or genetic analysis. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accuracy, compliance, and innovation when developing and applying genetic modification techniques in research or industry environments.

What does a genetic engineer do?

A genetic engineer manipulates an organism's DNA to modify or enhance traits, often using techniques like gene editing and recombinant DNA technology. They work in laboratories, applying knowledge of genetics, molecular biology, and biotechnology to develop medical, agricultural, or industrial solutions.

What are typical daily responsibilities for a Genetic Engineer in a research or industry setting?

As a Genetic Engineer, your daily tasks often include designing genetic experiments, performing molecular biology techniques such as cloning or gene editing, and analyzing results with specialized software. You'll spend significant time in the lab, working with both advanced instruments and biological samples, and also document your findings for reports or publications. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including biologists, data scientists, and regulatory professionals—is common to ensure project goals are met efficiently. This blend of hands-on laboratory work, data analysis, and teamwork makes the role dynamic and integral to scientific innovation.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum engineering, aerospace engineering, and software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High-paying engineering positions often require advanced degrees, certifications, and work in high-demand industries or executive-level responsibilities.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. High-level roles typically require extensive experience, advanced skills, and sometimes leadership responsibilities or advanced certifications.

Job description

About Probably Genetic
Probably Genetic is changing the lives of patients living with severe, complex diseases. Our data platform is used by drug developers and patient advocacy groups to develop and launch treatments for these patients. Our technology discovers undiagnosed patients online, analyzes their disease state using machine learning and at-home testing, and enables compliant communication with patients. In doing so, we help patients access diagnoses, clinical trials, and treatments as early as possible.
We are a tight-knit group of hard-working, ambitious problem solvers united by a mission greater than ourselves. We do well by doing right by patients. We are developing some of the most cutting-edge solutions in healthcare, and our roadmap is packed with innovations in bioinformatics, AI, and drug development. We have built a lean, all-star team to help us bring our vision to life, and we want you to be a part of it.
Probably Genetic has raised multiple rounds of funding from Silicon Valley's best investors, including Threshold, Khosla, and Y Combinator, and offer competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, and meaningful early stage equity.
About the Role
