Genetic Counseling Intern information

What is a genetic counseling intern?

Genetic Counseling Interns are graduate students or trainees who are gaining practical experience in the field of genetic counseling under the supervision of certified genetic counselors. They assist with patient intakes, collect family and medical histories, and participate in counseling sessions to learn how to communicate genetic information and support patients. Interns are typically enrolled in an accredited genetic counseling program and are completing required clinical rotations as part of their training. Their work helps prepare them for certification and independent practice as genetic counselors.

What types of cases and patient interactions can I expect during my genetic counseling internship?

As a Genetic Counseling Intern, you will typically encounter a diverse range of cases including prenatal, pediatric, cancer, and adult genetics. Your daily responsibilities will involve shadowing certified genetic counselors, participating in patient intakes, drafting family histories, and assisting with risk assessments. You'll also collaborate closely with physicians, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals to understand diagnostic processes and patient management. This exposure provides a well-rounded experience and helps you build essential counseling skills in a supervised, supportive environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a genetic counseling intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Genetic Counseling Intern, you need a solid understanding of genetics, biology, and counseling principles, often supported by coursework in genetic counseling or a related field. Familiarity with pedigree charting software, genetic databases, and laboratory information systems is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly are essential soft skills for effective client interactions. These skills and qualities are crucial for supporting clients through sensitive genetic information and collaborating with healthcare professionals.
