As of Jul 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for genetic biology in the United States is $26.92, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.03 and $39.66 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Genetic Biology, and why are they important?

To excel in Genetic Biology, you need a strong background in genetics, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, usually supported by at least a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with laboratory techniques such as PCR, DNA sequencing, and data analysis software like BLAST or Geneious is commonly required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills that set outstanding professionals apart. These skills ensure accurate research, effective data interpretation, and clear collaboration within scientific teams, driving advances in genetic understanding and applications.

What are common collaboration opportunities for professionals in genetic biology within multidisciplinary research teams?

Professionals in genetic biology often work closely with experts from bioinformatics, molecular biology, clinical research, and biostatistics to drive scientific discoveries. Collaboration is essential for designing experiments, analyzing genetic data, and translating findings into practical applications such as diagnostics or therapeutics. Working in such teams allows genetic biologists to gain insights from different fields, contribute their expertise to complex projects, and broaden their skillset, which can open doors to leadership roles or specialized research positions in the future.

What is genetic biology?

Genetic biology is the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in living organisms. It explores how traits are passed from one generation to another and how genes influence the development, function, and behavior of organisms. Professionals in genetic biology often work in research, healthcare, agriculture, or biotechnology, contributing to advances in medicine, crop improvement, and understanding of genetic diseases.

What careers can you do with genetics?

Genetic biology opens careers such as genetic counselor, research scientist, clinical laboratory technician, bioinformatics analyst, and molecular biologist. These roles often require knowledge of laboratory techniques, data analysis, and understanding of genetic principles, with opportunities in healthcare, research institutions, and biotech companies.

What is the difference between Genetic Biology vs Molecular Biologist?

AspectGenetic BiologyMolecular Biologist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Genetics, Biology, or related fieldBachelor's or Master's in Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related field
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, biotech companiesResearch labs, healthcare, biotech firms
Industry UsageFocuses on genetic traits, inheritance, and DNA analysisFocuses on molecular mechanisms, DNA/RNA, and protein interactions

Genetic Biology and Molecular Biologist roles often overlap in research settings, but Genetic Biology emphasizes genetic traits and inheritance, while Molecular Biologists focus on molecular mechanisms and interactions. Both careers require similar educational backgrounds and are used in research and biotech industries, but their specific focus areas differ.

What biology jobs pay over $100k?

In genetic biology, roles such as genetic counselors, research directors, and senior molecular biologists often have salaries exceeding $100,000 annually. These positions typically require advanced degrees, specialized skills in genomics or bioinformatics, and experience in laboratory or clinical settings.

What does a genetic biologist do?

A genetic biologist studies genes, heredity, and genetic variation in organisms. They conduct experiments, analyze DNA sequences, and may work in laboratories or research settings to understand genetic functions and develop medical or agricultural applications.
