What is a generator apprentice?

A Generator Apprentice is an entry-level trainee who learns how to install, maintain, and repair electrical generators under the supervision of experienced technicians or electricians. They gain hands-on experience with various types of generators, including diesel, gas, and portable units, while studying safety procedures and electrical systems. The apprenticeship typically involves a combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training, preparing individuals for a career as a generator technician or mechanic. This role is ideal for those interested in electrical work and mechanical systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a generator apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Generator Apprentice, you need foundational knowledge of electrical systems, mechanical aptitude, and usually a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with tools such as multimeters, hand tools, and basic diagnostic software is often required, and pursuing OSHA or electrical safety certifications can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn set candidates apart in this role. These skills ensure safe, efficient repairs and maintenance of generators, supporting reliable power solutions for clients.

What are some common challenges generator apprentices face during their training period?

Generator Apprentices often encounter challenges such as adapting to a fast-paced, hands-on work environment and learning to safely handle complex electrical equipment. Balancing classroom theory with on-the-job practical tasks can be demanding, especially when troubleshooting generator malfunctions under supervision. Additionally, apprentices may find it challenging to master industry safety standards while working in various weather conditions or remote locations. However, these experiences are valuable for building strong technical and problem-solving skills essential for career advancement.

What is the difference between Generator Apprentice vs Generator Technician?

AspectGenerator ApprenticeGenerator Technician
CertificationsBasic electrical or technical certifications, on-the-job trainingAdvanced certifications, such as EPA or manufacturer-specific training
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, supervised, on-site or in training facilitiesMore independent, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance tasks
Job ResponsibilitiesAssisting with installation, basic maintenance, learning safety protocolsDiagnosing issues, repairing generators, performing complex maintenance

The Generator Apprentice role is an entry-level position focused on learning and assisting with basic tasks under supervision. In contrast, the Generator Technician is a more experienced role responsible for diagnosing and repairing generators independently. Both roles require technical knowledge, but the technician position demands advanced certifications and hands-on experience. The apprentice position serves as a stepping stone toward becoming a fully qualified generator technician.

Job description

Generator Field Service Technician — Where Precision and Reliability Are Valued

If you're a technician who takes satisfaction in doing the job right the first time, Prime Power Services was built for people like you.

We're looking for a Generator Field Service Technician who brings a methodical, detail-oriented approach to diesel and natural gas power generation equipment. This is a role where accuracy matters, procedures exist for good reason, and your technical expertise is genuinely respected.

Why Technicians Stay at Prime Power

A Stable, Structured Work Environment
You'll operate within clearly defined processes, established safety standards, and consistent expectations. There's no guesswork about what's required — you'll know exactly what's expected, and you'll have the tools and documentation to do it right.

Technical Depth, Not Just Task Volume
This isn't a role that rushes you from one job to the next. You'll have the time and resources to diagnose problems thoroughly, complete work properly, and close out jobs with confidence. We value doing it correctly over doing it quickly.

Training That Builds Real Expertise
Our training campus in Mableton, Georgia offers hands-on, technical instruction — not generic corporate training. Earn meaningful credentials including OSHA 10, OSHA 30, and EGSA Apprentice or Journeyman certifications, backed by 40+ hours of paid annual training. Your growth plan is yours — developed with your goals in mind.

Supportive Leadership That Earns Your Trust
You'll report to supervisors who provide clear direction, set defined objectives, and give you the independence to do your work once you're established. We don't micromanage skilled technicians — we trust people who've demonstrated they know what they're doing.

Recognition That Means Something
Quality work doesn't go unnoticed here. We recognize individual contributions directly and personally. Your consistency, accuracy, and reliability will be seen by the people who matter.

Competitive, Stable Compensation

  • Competitive base pay plus technician commission opportunities
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Flexible spending accounts
  • 401(k) with generous employer matching

What Your Day-to-Day Looks Like

  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on diesel and natural gas generators
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), generator controls, excitation systems, and related equipment
  • Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals with care and accuracy
  • Complete service documentation thoroughly and on time
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers regarding equipment status and service findings
  • Follow established safety procedures, company policies, and industry best practices consistently

What We're Looking For

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 3 years of power generation experience
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills
  • Comfort working from technical documentation and established procedures
  • A careful, detail-oriented approach to diagnostics and recordkeeping
  • Professional, straightforward communication style
  • Valid driving record with fewer than three moving violations and no felony convictions
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening

If you're a technician who takes pride in accurate work, prefers a focused environment with clear expectations, and wants an employer who will invest in your long-term development — we'd like to hear from you.

Apply today and bring your precision to a team that knows how to use it.
