Job description

About Abridge

Abridge was founded in 2018 with the mission of powering deeper understanding in healthcare. Our AI-powered platform was purpose-built for medical conversations, improving clinical documentation efficiencies while enabling clinicians to focus on what matters most—their patients.

Our enterprise-grade technology transforms patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time, with deep EMR integrations. Powered by Linked Evidence and our purpose-built, auditable AI, we are the only company that maps AI-generated summaries to ground truth, helping providers quickly trust and verify the output. As pioneers in generative AI for healthcare, we are setting the industry standards for the responsible deployment of AI across health systems.

We are a growing team of practicing MDs, AI scientists, PhDs, creatives, technologists, and engineers working together to empower people and make care make more sense. We have offices located in the Mission District in San Francisco, the SoHo neighborhood of New York, and East Liberty in Pittsburgh.

The Role

As an Associate GC, Product (Data Products, Machine Learning, and AI), you'll play a pivotal role as the go-to legal advisor for the teams building Abridge's AI and machine learning models, products, and technologies. This role is highly cross-functional across Abridge with a focus on advising product teams on the cutting edge of AI model and product developments, from ambient clinical documentation to emerging agentic and multimodal healthcare experiences. This is a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of the legal, AI, and healthcare fields, shaping how a category-defining company navigates novel legal terrain.

What You'll Do
  • Serve as go-to counsel and partner for teams building Abridge's core AI models and products, advising on legal issues that span model development, agentic workflows, multimodal outputs, and downstream clinical use.
  • Identify, address, and design practical mitigations for AI-specific legal risks, including model behavior, output accuracy, IP, data provenance and training rights, and liability for AI-generated content.
  • Develop and scale flexible legal processes, frameworks, and contract language suited to the pace of frontier AI development, rather than relying solely on precedent from other industries.
  • Serve as an internal expert on AI legal and policy matters, helping shape Abridge's positions on emerging AI regulation and representing those positions with external counsel, regulators, and industry groups as needed.
  • Support privacy impact assessments, model risk assessments, and data governance frameworks specific to AI training, fine-tuning, and deployment.
  • Partner with legal, product, and compliance stakeholders on AI principles such as transparency, accountability, and human oversight.
What You'll Bring
  • Passion for Abridge's mission and the drive to support fast-moving AI product and research teams.
  • 12+ years of legal experience, including 6+ years counseling on AI, machine learning, or other emerging technology products. Prior in-house experience is required.
  • Creativity in navigating novel legal matters, including building new processes, language, and frameworks to meet the needs of a fast-moving company in an emerging industry.
  • Working knowledge of AI-specific legal issues, including IP and copyright in AI-generated content, training data rights, model liability, and responsible AI principles.
  • Proven ability to translate complex regulatory and technical AI concepts into clear, practical guidance for non-legal, technical audiences.
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity, tight timelines, and a high volume of novel legal questions with no settled precedent.
  • Strong sense of ownership, intellectual curiosity about technology, and sound judgment in ambiguous situations.
Bonus Points If…
  • You have prior in-house experience at a growth-stage AI or healthcare technology company.
  • You have a strong understanding of federal and state healthcare laws, including HIPAA and data privacy regulations, as applied to AI systems.

This role is in San Francisco or New York City. Monday/Wednesday/Friday are in office days.
