Flexible Data Science information

What is flexible data science?

Flexible data science refers to the practice of applying data science methods, tools, and techniques in a way that adapts to different industries, project requirements, and work environments. Professionals in flexible data science may work remotely, part-time, on contract, or across multiple domains, using skills in statistics, programming, and data analysis to solve a variety of problems. This approach allows both employers and data scientists to adjust workflows and deliverables to fit changing business needs and schedules.

How does a flexible data science role typically structure collaboration and workload across multiple projects?

In a flexible data science role, professionals often work on several projects simultaneously, collaborating with cross-functional teams such as engineering, product management, and business stakeholders. This structure requires strong communication skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. The work environment is usually dynamic, with shifting priorities and the need to adapt to different project requirements. Flexibility in both working hours and methodologies enables data scientists to manage deadlines while delivering actionable insights for diverse business needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Flexible Data Scientist, you need a strong background in statistics, programming (Python or R), and data analysis, often supported by a degree in a quantitative field. Familiarity with machine learning libraries (like scikit-learn or TensorFlow), data visualization tools (such as Tableau or Power BI), and experience with cloud platforms are widely required. Adaptability, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating complex data insights into actionable business strategies. These competencies ensure you can handle varied data challenges, deliver valuable insights, and collaborate effectively across dynamic project environments.

Graduate Opportunity - Consultant in GenIA (Located in San Francisco Office)

Sia is a specialist Management Consulting firm which was initially established in Paris, France in 1999 and has grown into a global firm with over 3,000 employees and annual revenue exceeding $500m. Our culture is strongly orientated towards high-quality expertise and delivering excellent results and outcomes for our clients, which include a wide range of multinational companies. Testament to its success, Sia has shown double-digit growth every year since inception.

Sia is a pioneer of Consulting 4.0, putting us at the forefront of the technology revolution, deploying augmented Consultants capable of leveraging emerging digital technology to enhance and improve their cognitive reasoning, analysis and planning. Supported by Augmented & Artificial Intelligence, Automation and Data Science we empower our clients to make the right decisions at the right time for the right reasons.

With our consultants representing 41 different nationalities, we are a highly diverse team spread across 48 offices in 19countries. However, using innovative technologies such as our own in-house apps, social networks, and digital tools, we provide a truly integrated global service.

Sia is an equal opportunities employer, committed to diversity, inclusion and employee well-being. Our diversity and inclusion networks (local and global) contribute to a pipeline of initiatives to enhance employee quality of life and foster a caring environment to work in.

Employees are encouraged to contribute to these initiatives and drive positive change in the organisation across 5 pillars:Women@Sia, LGBTQ+, Multi-Ethnic, Well-being and Environment.

As part of the expansion of its activities, Sia is hiring a GenAI Consultant for its San Francisco office.

Reporting to the AI & Data Business Unit, you will design and implement cutting-edge GenAI/LLM solutions across various industries. You will play a key role in bridging the gap between Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers, and Platform Engineers to deliver tangible business value through AI. You will guide clients toward the best approaches—such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), agents, or fine-tuning—for optimized and cost-effective impact.

Beyond prompt creation, you will be responsible for designing and developing robust, scalable products. You will be involved throughout the entire AI lifecycle, ensuring seamless model integration optimized for performance and security, while addressing infrastructure challenges. Your role includes research, design, implementation, and optimization of AI systems.

You have strong expertise in both:

Model stack (FM, VLM, SLM): leveraging open or proprietary foundational models such as GPT-x, Claude, or Gemini, as well as lightweight models deployable at the edge like Mistral or Arcee AI, to deliver cost-effective solutions to business users.

The GenAI application framework ecosystem: including chaining, retrieval-augmented generation, autonomous agents, and vector search tools (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex, pgvector).

Qualifications

You hold a degree from a top-tier engineering school, and we are looking for:

1–2 years of experience in a similar role.

Strong proficiency in Python and generative AI frameworks such as LangChain or LlamaIndex.

Knowledge of natural language processing and understanding (NLP/NLU).

Expertise in embedding vectorization and semantic search techniques.

Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Strong problem-solving abilities.

You can expect…
  • A supportive atmosphere, where innovation and initiative are encouraged.
  • A commitment to diversity, inclusion and employee well-being.
  • Opportunities to flex your intellectual and creative muscles.
  • Welcoming, friendly and professional colleagues.
  • A personal development plan with clear goals for advancement.
  • A meritocratic approach to promotion that rewards those who exceed expectations.
  • A competitive salary, in line with the market and your peers.
  • Flexible working arrangements.
  • A performance-related bonus.
  • Health and Life insurance.
  • 27 days holiday per year, plus Bank Holidays

Sia is an equal opportunity employer. All aspects of employment, including hiring, promotion, remuneration, or discipline, are based solely on performance, competence, conduct, or business needs.
