Job description

Application Instructions
Since 1957, Penhall has been the premier provider of concrete services to the United States and Canada for a wide variety of industries. It all began with Leroy Penhall's realization of an opportunity during Anaheim, California's "Orange Grove Development Boom" of the 1950s. He purchased his first gas-powered diamond saw, which allowed him to carry out concrete work with accuracy and speed. Penhall has since grown to offer a comprehensive selection of concrete services, including scanning, cutting, sawing, breaking, and removal.
At Penhall, our success is built on the strength of our people, our equipment, and our commitment to safety. We are looking for a Shop Manager who is ready to take ownership of daily operations, lead a skilled team, and keep our equipment and crews ready to perform at the highest level.
If you are a hands-on leader with experience managing shop operations, heavy equipment, fleet maintenance, and construction teams, we want to hear from you.
Position Description
Position Summary:
The Shop Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the branch shop, yard, equipment, and support teams. This position plays a critical role in ensuring field crews have the equipment, materials, and support needed to safely and efficiently complete projects.
The ideal candidate is a strong leader who can balance operational priorities, team development, equipment management, and customer service while maintaining Penhall's high standards for safety and quality.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage daily shop and yard operations to support branch production goals.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop mechanics, yard personnel, and support staff.
  • Coordinate manpower needs, workload priorities, and operational resources.
  • Ensure equipment, vehicles, and tools are properly maintained, available, and ready for field operations.
  • Oversee preventative maintenance programs for fleet vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic equipment issues.
  • Manage equipment inventory, including diamond tools, parts, supplies, and replacements.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and control costs through effective purchasing practices.
  • Order parts and supplies while negotiating costs with vendors when needed.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT requirements, FMCSA regulations, and company safety standards.
  • Schedule and support required safety inspections for vehicles and equipment.
  • Partner closely with Operations Managers, Dispatch, Field Supervisors, and leadership teams.
  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, training, and development of shop and field employees.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that increase efficiency, productivity, and safety.
  • Provide hands-on support in the field when operational needs require.
  • Prepare reports, documentation, and operational updates as needed.

Position Requirements
What We're Looking For:
  • Experienced construction, fleet, equipment, or shop operations leader.
  • Strong knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance, including electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience leading teams in a fast-paced construction, industrial, or service environment.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to coach, train, and hold teams accountable.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a safety-first mindset.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in concrete, construction, demolition, heavy equipment, or related industries.
  • Experience managing mechanics, fleet, or field service operations.
  • Knowledge of DOT/FMCSA compliance requirements.
  • Previous leadership experience in a union or skilled trade environment.
