Summary/Objective:

The Steel Estimator is responsible for providing a complete estimate on industrial projects, modular fabrication, and supplemental commercial projects upon assignment by the Estimating Manager. Projects involved will mainly be industrial/manufacturing plants. Commercial projects may involve Office, University Facilities, Healthcare, Laboratories, Data Centers, and Central Plants

The Estimator must be a self-starter with the ability to assemble steel trade estimates with moderate supervision. The Estimator must be a flexible and adaptable team player with good communication skills.

Essential Functions

  • Review all construction documents including Instructions to Bidders, Bid Forms and Scope of Work
  • Solicit subcontractor and vendor quotations to ensure coverage on all scopes of work
  • Distribute plans, specifications and addenda to subcontractors and vendors via company ftp website and/or email
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits as required which may result in travel time on occasion
  • Work as part of a team to coordinate scope of work between in-house trades (Sheet Metal, Fire Protection, Plumbing, Electrical, Steel, Millwrights) as required
  • Take-off all equipment and material for trade specific scope of work utilizing the Tekla PowerFab (Trimble) computerized estimating system.
  • Enter all material, labor, sub pricing, vendor pricing, equipment rentals and other costs into bid summary a day or two before bid due date
  • Thoroughly review all take-off and pricing for completeness on all self-performed work
  • Review in detail assigned subcontractor and vendor quotations for full compliance with the plans and specifications
  • Review and enter required equipment rentals for the steel trade scope of work
  • Provide trade specific scope of work to Preconstruction Manager for incorporation into proposals
  • Upon award of projects, assist in procurement of materials and equipment as required
  • Enter the steel trade estimate into job cost control program and participate in turnover/transition meetings with the Operations team
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility: No

Required

  • 2+ years' experience Estimating Pre-Construction and/or equivalent combination of vocational training and experience
  • 5+ years of experience in structural steel/miscellaneous metals construction ( industrial and/or commercial)
  • Knowledge and efficiency in computer/network based estimating software (Tekla, Fabtrol, Fabsuite or equivalent)
  • A solid and thorough understanding of structural and miscellaneous metal drawings and details
  • A general understanding of the AWS D1.1 welding code and AISC Steel Construction
  • Understanding and capable of taking off complete industrial steel systems
  • Understanding means and methods of construction for the steel trades including shop fabrication
  • Experience in providing budgets, construction schedules, and manpower projections
  • Time management skills and organizational skills
  • Ability to follow and understand directions
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Good technical writing and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Must be able to multi-task, work with minimal supervision, follow written and oral instructions, show attention to detail and demonstrate problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to pass post-offer pre-employment drug screen, and may be required to satisfactorily complete additional background checks as required (i.e. DMV, criminal history)
  • Must adhere to all company policy and procedures
  • Must be available to work assigned schedules

The work environment and physical demands required would be representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, and may include, but are not limited to the following:

Work Environment:
  • Works in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment
  • Position may require visits to construction site
Physical Demands:
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopier, etc. Site visits will require walking through existing buildings, industrial plants and/or on-going construction sites. This will involve stairs and at times ladders on multiple floors/levels.
Travel:
  • May require infrequent travel (typically not overnight)

Preferred

  • AAS or BS Degree: Engineering, Construction Management or 5+ years' experience in the construction industry
  • Experience with MS Project or other scheduling software
  • HS diploma or GED equivalent
  • Prior military experience
