What is a general laborer trainee?

A General Laborer Trainee is an entry-level worker who assists with various manual tasks on construction sites, warehouses, or manufacturing plants while learning the necessary skills for the job. They typically perform duties such as cleaning, moving materials, operating simple tools, and helping skilled laborers. The position is designed to provide hands-on experience and training, allowing individuals to advance to more specialized roles over time. No prior experience is usually required, making it ideal for those starting their careers in the trades or general labor.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a general laborer trainee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a General Laborer Trainee, you need physical stamina, basic math skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand tools, power equipment, and workplace safety protocols like OSHA standards is often required. Reliability, teamwork, and a strong work ethic are critical soft skills for this position. These abilities ensure work is completed efficiently, safely, and in coordination with others on job sites.

However, with proper training and support from experienced coworkers, most trainees quickly build the skills and stamina needed to succeed. Staying open to feedback and maintaining a strong work ethic will help you overcome these initial hurdles.

Job description

Mission Linen Supply is looking for accomplished Sales Managers, District Managers, Regional Managers, Operations Managers, or General Managers with 10+ years of management experience who want to bring their leadership skills into a new industry and build a long-term career.

No industrial laundry experience is required. We're not looking for industry veterans, we're looking for proven leaders who know how to run a P&L, develop a team, and drive results, and who are ready to learn our business from the ground up through a structured, paid training program. This is not an entry-level position; it's designed specifically for mid-career and senior managers with a track record of success elsewhere who want to step into a General Manager role.

Why Mission Linen Supply

If you're looking for a stable industry with room to grow, not just a job, but a career path, this program is built for that. Mission Linen Supply is a family-owned, privately held company and a leading provider of linen, uniform, and facility service products across five western states. Founded in 1930 and headquartered in Santa Barbara, CA, Mission has grown from a one-man operation into an industry leader, while remaining stable, essential, and steadily growing. Industrial laundry and linen services are a recession-resistant, essential industry in hospitals, hotels, and restaurants w need clean linens and uniforms regardless of the economy. That means real, ongoing opportunities for career advancement, not a static org chart.

The Opportunity: General Manager Trainee

As a General Manager Trainee, you'll go through a 30-week structured training program designed to prepare experienced managers like you to run one of our locations. You are not expected to know our industry going in, that's what the program is for.

The training program includes:

  • Rotations through key departments so you (and we) can identify where your skills and interests best fit
  • Ongoing support from senior management, with regular progress reviews
  • Company-sponsored management development workshops
  • A clear track into General Manager and other key leadership roles across the company

Upon successful completion, you'll transition into a management position leading your own team and location.

Compensation

  • Base salary during training: $80,000–$100,000, depending on experience, education, and location
  • After training: your base salary grows based on the revenue of the location you lead

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Retirement savings program
  • Paid time off (sick, holiday, vacation)

Relocation Requirement

Candidates must be willing to relocate to manage a location within their first three years in the program. Relocation is a required, ongoing expectation of this career path, not a one-time ask.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 10+ years of management experience (required)
  • A proven track record building and executing sales strategies that grow revenue and profitability
  • Experience owning Profit and Loss (P&L) accountability and monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in labor, inventory, and operational costs
  • A history of improving efficiency, reducing costs, and expanding market share
  • Strong people leadership: hiring, developing, and managing team performance
  • A demonstrated focus on customer service and customer retention
  • Willingness to relocate for career advancement
  • College degree preferred; military experience valued
  • Curiosity, drive, and a genuine willingness to learn a new industry from the ground up

Industry experience is not required or expected. What matters most is leadership ability, sales/operations experience, and a strong customer focus.
