  • Medical Director, General Surgery

    AdventHealth Mid-America Region Kansas City Area

    AdventHealth is seeking an experienced and visionary surgeon leader to serve as Medical Director of General Surgery for the Mid-America Region. This physician leader will guide the continued growth, integration, and advancement of a comprehensive regional General Surgery program while helping shape the future of surgical services across Kansas City and surrounding communities.

    This is a unique opportunity to lead a developing destination General Surgery program focused on innovation, quality outcomes, physician collaboration, and strategic expansion across multiple campuses. The Medical Director will partner closely with executive and physician leadership in a dyad model to drive clinical excellence, operational performance, and long-term service line development throughout the region.

    Role Overview

    The Medical Director will:

    • Lead the strategic growth and clinical development of General Surgery services across the AdventHealth Mid-America Region, including Shawnee Mission, South Overland Park, Lenexa City Center, and Ottawa.
    • Work with both employed and independent physician groups that total 12-15 physicians including general surgery, surgical oncology, colorectal and bariatric surgery.
    • Partner with administrative leadership to oversee quality, patient safety, operational performance, physician engagement, and service line expansion.
    • Advance a destination General Surgery program emphasizing personalized, evidence-based, and multidisciplinary surgical care.
    • Expand the complexity and scope of surgical services, including minimally invasive and robotic surgery initiatives.
    • Develop future strategies for trauma program implementation and optimization across regional campuses.
    • Standardize clinical protocols, quality metrics, and operational best practices across employed and independent physician groups.
    • Strengthen referral relationships and network integrity while enhancing access to surgical care throughout the region.
    • Support physician recruitment, mentorship, retention, and leadership development.
    • Dedicate approximately 20% of time to leadership responsibilities while maintaining an active clinical practice.

    Candidate Profile

    • Collaborative and visionary physician leader
    • Proven ability to mentor physicians and foster multidisciplinary teamwork
    • Strong communication, relationship-building, and strategic planning skills
    • Experience translating strategy into measurable operational goals
    • Knowledge of OR efficiency, quality metrics, accreditation standards, and service line operations
    • Ability to lead within a complex, multi-campus healthcare environment

    Experience & Credentials:

    • Board certified in General Surgery
    • Minimum of 10 years post-training experience
    • Demonstrated success developing or leading a recognized General Surgery program
    • Ability to obtain Kansas physician licensure
    • Experience with minimally invasive and robotic surgery preferred
    • MBA, MHA, or additional leadership training preferred
    • Trauma program development experience and understanding of regulations preferred
    • General Surgery preferred but open to other GS subspecialties
