General Contractor Internship information

What is a general contractor internship?

General Contractor Internships are temporary positions designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the construction industry. Interns work under the supervision of licensed general contractors, assisting with project management, site supervision, budgeting, and coordination of subcontractors. This role provides valuable exposure to the day-to-day operations of construction projects and helps interns develop essential skills needed for a future career in construction management.

What are the typical responsibilities of a general contractor intern?

As a General Contractor Intern, you can expect to assist with project coordination, site supervision, and communication between subcontractors and clients. Your daily tasks may include attending project meetings, reviewing blueprints, conducting site visits to monitor progress, and helping to ensure safety compliance. Interns often gain hands-on experience by shadowing experienced contractors, learning about budgeting, scheduling, and problem-solving on active job sites. This role offers a valuable opportunity to understand the workflow of construction projects and develop professional relationships within the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a general contractor intern?

To thrive as a General Contractor Intern, you need a basic understanding of construction processes, project management principles, and safety regulations, often supported by coursework in construction management or a related field. Familiarity with project scheduling software, blueprint reading, and tools like Microsoft Project or Procore is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills help interns interact effectively with subcontractors, clients, and supervisors. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring that construction projects run smoothly, safely, and on schedule.

Okland combines the stability of family ownership with employee ownership through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan. This unique structure provides the long-term perspective, and values-driven leadership that have guided our company for generations, while giving team members the opportunity to share the success they help create.

We invest in the next generation of construction talent through apprenticeships, internships, and scholarships for our communities. By expanding access for women, underrepresented groups, and families of our craft workforce who are first-generation college students, we strengthen the future of construction.

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

We're looking for an experienced VDC professional who has successfully managed design teams and partnered closely with architects and engineers throughout the design phase of commercial construction projects. You'll lead preconstruction VDC efforts using BIM tools like Revit to drive coordination, alignment, and project success. To thrive in this role, you'll need strong design management experience, proficiency with Revit, and a collaborative approach to working with owners, designers, and trade partners. If you're passionate about leveraging technology to improve project outcomes and team collaboration, we'd love to connect with you.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY

Design & Team Coordination

  • Partner with architects, engineers, owners, and trade partners to align project goals and BIM/VDC strategies during design.
  • Lead coordination meetings and project clusters, including BIM, structural, MEP, and envelope reviews.
  • Use pull planning and collaborative workflows to keep design teams aligned with project schedules and milestones.

Preconstruction VDC Leadership

  • Manage the preconstruction VDC process from early design through construction readiness.
  • Oversee the development of federated 3D models that support coordination, logistics planning, quantity takeoffs, and design management.
  • Ensure BIM/VDC workflows, model deliverables, and coordination processes are understood and executed across project partners.

Technology & Project Delivery

  • Leverage Revit and other BIM tools to drive model-based coordination and extract quantities for estimating.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project outcomes through technology, innovation, and integrated construction practices.
  • Support VDC training and knowledge-sharing efforts with internal teams, design partners, and trade partners.

YOU'RE READY FOR THIS ROLE IF YOU HAVE

  • A bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in design management, VDC, BIM, or a related construction-focused role.
  • Proven experience managing design teams and collaborating directly with architects, engineers, owners, and trade partners throughout the design phase.
  • Proficiency with BIM software, including Autodesk Revit; experience with Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), Navisworks, or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Experience working with 3D coordination, federated models, quantity takeoffs (QTO), and model-based project delivery workflows.
  • A strong understanding of commercial construction processes, design documentation, and integrated project delivery approaches such as Design-Build, Design Assist, or IPD.
  • The ability to lead cross-functional teams, facilitate coordination efforts, and communicate effectively with a wide range of project stakeholders.
  • A collaborative mindset, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, highly integrated project environment.
