What does a general carpenter do?

A general carpenter is a skilled tradesperson who constructs, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures made of wood and other materials. Their work includes framing walls, building door and window frames, installing cabinets, and finishing interiors. General carpenters may work on residential, commercial, or industrial projects and often collaborate with other construction professionals. They use a variety of hand and power tools to complete their tasks safely and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a general carpenter?

To thrive as a General Carpenter, you need proficiency in measuring, cutting, and assembling wood and other materials, often supported by a high school diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with power tools, hand tools, and construction site safety protocols is essential, and certifications like OSHA training can be advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong teamwork skills help carpenters adapt to project changes and collaborate effectively on job sites. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensuring safe, precise, and efficient construction that meets project specifications and client expectations.

What are some common challenges general carpenters face when working on construction sites?

General Carpenters often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly changing project timelines, coordinating with other trades (like electricians and plumbers), and working in varying weather conditions. Safety is a top priority, so staying vigilant and adhering to protocols is essential. Additionally, carpenters must be able to interpret blueprints accurately and adjust their work as project requirements evolve, all while maintaining high-quality craftsmanship in a fast-paced environment.

The General Carpenter II performs rough and finish carpentry tasks in support of commercial construction projects with a higher degree of independence, working under the general direction of a foreman or superintendent. This is a mid-level field position for an experienced carpenter capable of executing more complex layout and installation work with minimal supervision, maintaining consistent quality, and providing guidance to less experienced carpenters and laborers on site.
Key Responsibilities
Field Carpentry & Layout
  • Independently read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine layout, sequencing, and material needs.
  • Measure, mark, cut, and shape wood, plywood, and other materials with precision using hand and power tools.
  • Perform rough carpentry tasks including framing, blocking, and concrete formwork, including more complex layouts (e.g., elevated slabs, curved or non-standard forms).
  • Perform finish carpentry tasks such as installing trim, doors, hardware, and ceiling grid systems, ensuring a high standard of fit and finish.
  • Take ownership of assigned scopes of work, coordinating sequencing with other trades where needed.

Tools, Materials & Site Support
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and small equipment associated with carpentry work.
  • Assist with the loading, unloading, and staging of materials on site.
  • Build and install temporary structures such as barricades, protection, and site signage as directed.
  • Maintain, clean, and properly store tools and equipment; keep assigned work areas clean and organized.

Safety & Quality
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations; wear required PPE at all times on site.
  • Perform work in accordance with project specifications and quality standards.
  • Report unsafe conditions, damaged tools/equipment, or quality concerns to the foreman or superintendent.

Mentorship & Teamwork
  • Work collaboratively with foremen, superintendents, other trades, and subcontractors on site.
  • Provide on-the-job guidance and quality checks for General Carpenter I staff, apprentices, and laborers.
  • Help troubleshoot layout, sequencing, or quality issues in the field and recommend solutions to the foreman.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; trade school or apprenticeship training a plus.
  • 3๏ฟฝ5 years of carpentry or commercial construction field experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of hand and power tools, and layout/measurement techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications independently.
  • Experience with both rough and finish carpentry on commercial projects.
  • OSHA 10 certification required; OSHA 30 a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to guide or mentor less experienced carpenters and laborers.
  • Reliable transportation to assigned jobsites.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, and heavier loads with assistance.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb ladders or scaffolding for extended periods.
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces as required by the task.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active jobsites.

We're looking for someone who requires minimal training and can step in to immediately run projects with confidence.
