Job description

The Sr. Scientific Manager will help drive and execute our strategy for the adoption and use of blood-brian-barrier (BBB) models across the company and development portfolio. In particular, they will be responsible for aligning our model development and validation efforts across the REDs, representing Genentech in external consortia developing blood-brain-barrier modeling technologies, and driving internal adoption of blood-brain barrier modeling technologies in our pharma pipeline. In addition, this position will also be responsible for a portion of routine data generation, including generating data to support project teams, training scientists on usage of in vitro BBB models, and maintaining general laboratory upkeep tasks. Due to combined needs across strategic management, stakeholder organization, and in-laboratory skills, this position requires a candidate with strong organizational, multi-tasking, and communication skills, and must feel comfortable in a fast-paced and diverse research environment.

The Opportunity:

As an integral member of our dynamic team, you will:

  • Drive momentum in New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), and collaborate internally across research and development functions to drive adoption of BBB NAMs in our portfolio projects.

  • Join a team of leading scientists driving momentum in New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), and collaborate internally across research and development functions to drive adoption of BBB NAMs in our portfolio projects.

  • Gain exposure to internal molecule development teams and participate by generating data to contribute to molecule progression.

  • Develop external presence and influence by representing Genentech in relevant external consortia on NAM technologies and help guide their activities to represent our interests in BBB and beyond.

Key Responsibilities in Role:

Project management, Strategic Planning and Execution

  • Contribute to and refine our organ area strategy for BBB models, and be responsible for communications and activity updates to project teams, development functions, and leadership teams.

  • Play a key role in aligning overall BBB strategy across Roche and Genentech by coordinating scientific sharing across the REDs. Track and drive progression of adopting these models across functions.

  • Facilitate partnerships with external collaborators, including academic institutions, consortiums, and CROs to drive NAM science that enables adoption..

  • Manage external collaborations in the BBB organ area with the above groups, which are a key component of our overall BBB technology strategy. Be responsible for both experimental and logistical requirements for these collaborations, e.g. experimental design, compound requests & shipment, etc.

Laboratory and Scientific Contributions

  • Act as a central source of knowledge for BBB models used at Genentech, and perform experiments requiring usage of these models to support cross-functional needs, primarily active research & development requests.

  • Perform training of end-users across internal functions, and provide experimental and scientific support as necessary to aid in model troubleshooting, data interpretation, and development of new assays or models as necessary.

  • Participate in maintenance of routine laboratory upkeep tasks, such as stocking, coordinating equipment maintenance, cleanouts, etc.

Who You Are:

  • Ph.D. in biology, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, pharmacology, or a related field with significant experience in in vitro systems; exceptional candidates with equivalent experience will be considered.

  • 1-3+ years of experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or research organizations, with a focus on complex in vitro systems.

  • Proven experience in developing, qualifying, and applying complex in vitro BBB models in the form of organoids, MPS, or related platforms in a drug discovery or translational research setting.

  • Prior experience in a project management or strategy-focused role is highly desirable, with demonstrated success in cross-functional collaboration.

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Project management expertise and impeccable organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

  • Scientific experience and background in blood-brain barrier biology or neurobiology and in vitro modeling.

  • Strong understanding of the biological underpinnings and applications of complex in vitro systems in drug development.

  • Team-oriented mindset, with a focus on fostering innovation, collaboration, and driving to impact.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $121,100.00- $224,900 Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
