Spanish GED/HSED Instructor Position Description

The Spanish GED/HSED Instructor is a full-time employee who, in Spanish, conducts new student enrollment, provides GED/HSED instruction and record-keeping, facilitates GED/HSED Orientation and GED testing, and provides student persistence support.

Supervisor: Director of Omega School of Literacy Network

Employee Status: Regular Full-Time

Hours: 36.5 hours/week. On-site position; 18-day WFH bank per employee handbook.

Pay: $23-25/hour base pay (commensurate with experience), plus $1/hour bilingual differential

Benefits Included: This position is eligible for full benefits, including health, dental, and retirement.

Responsibilities:

1.   GED/HSED Instruction                                                                                             40%

·        Provide skill-appropriate GED/HSED instruction to students using a variety of methods (testing, reviewing answers and skill building activities) and GED/HSED materials.

·        Based on assessment and observation, choose and use classroom materials that are appropriate to students’ abilities and interest.

·        Coach students on test-taking strategies.

·        Review student assignments using Literacy Network rubrics and proctor assignments as needed

·        Provide support for night school programming including GED/HSED instruction with students, working with volunteers and monitoring student progress.

2.   GED/HSED Student Intake                                                                                       30%

·        Conduct new student enrollments and administer, skill and career assessments

·        Work with the student to complete Dane County GED Demographic 50 forms and Department of Public Instruction (DPI) Pre-Application to GED/HSED forms.

·        Provide GED/HSED Orientation.

·        Help the student complete their employability requirements.

·        Share information about the GED/HSED process with the student as needed; have student sign to confirm they have received information about the different ways to get a GED/HSED in Wisconsin.

·        Create student folders; file registration & assessment forms and other records to complete checklist

3.   .  Record-Keeping, Tracking, and Reporting                                                                    15%

·        Maintain accurate daily record keeping including student attendance and progress notes in their folders.

·        Monitor and record student GED testing or HSED curriculum progress.

·        Assist with the preparation of all GED/HSED program reports, including weekly, monthly and quarterly reports as required by program funding sources.

4.   Student Persistence Support                                                                                  10%

·        Maintain on-going contact with students by encouraging regular attendance.

·        Recommend taking official GED test at MATC when a student is ready.

·        Call, email or text students who do not maintain regular attendance to check in on them. Offer resources if there are barriers; encourage them to continue studying.

5.   General Office Duties:                                                                                              5%

·        Support colleagues in answering the door and phones and assisting students as needed

·        Participate in all-staff and High School Completion Team meetings and trainings

·        Engage in professional development opportunities as applicable and as schedule permits

·        Act as a representative of Literacy Network in the community, on behalf of our student population and in service to community members seeking information on our programs and your areas of expertise

The ideal candidate is collaborative, kind, and passionate about helping others reach their goals. They are flexible and well-organized, and can work well in multicultural teams and with diverse constituencies. They are self-motivated, persistent, and remain balanced under pressure. The following skills and attributes are required:

·        Bachelor’s or master’s degree in education, reading instruction, Spanish, a STEM subject, and/or significant field or work experience in education, language instruction, workforce development, or adult literacy

·        Fluency in Spanish; conversational English

·        Previous teaching experience preferred

·        Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills

·        Excellent written and oral presentation skills

·        Excellent organizational skills

·        Ability to think strategically and critically

·        Computer skills in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Google Drive

·        Proven record of persistence in learning and meeting goals

·        Demonstrated commitment to Literacy Network's mission to help people improve their lives
