Overview
GE Vernova is the leading software provider for planning and operations of national and regional electricity grids globally. Grid Software (a division of GE Vernova) is driving the GridOS platform—a composable suite of applications on a common platform to meet the energy industry’s needs and support the energy transition. This role, reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering for Plan Portfolio, is for a highly experienced Software Architect who will collaborate across GridOS Plan products deployed in field, edge, and customer IT/OT environments worldwide. The role partners with lead software architects in field, modeling and geospatial, data and analytics areas to ensure secure, performant and composable designs and implementations. The Principal Architect will lead the architectural strategy and hands-on activities across GridOS Plan product lines, guiding technical vision, best practices, and deployment patterns across Cloud/Hybrid/On-Premises environments to deliver a scalable, containerized micro-service architecture at scale.
Responsibilities
- Systems Architecture & Engineering Focus: Hands-on design, technical implementation, and modernization of the application stack.
- Architect Cloud-Native Applications: Design and evolve distributed systems using micro-services, containers, Kubernetes, serverless, and modern DevOps practices.
- Guide Front-End Modernization: Shape UI architecture including micro-front-ends, design systems, and performance optimization for workstation and mobile interfaces.
- Build Data Product Foundations: Architect data pipelines, data patterns, real-time streaming, and API-driven data services.
- Strategic Leadership & Alignment Focus: Bridge business objectives and technical roadmaps; translate business strategy into scalable technical roadmaps and architectural investments.
- Define and Operationalize SaaS Strategy: Establish patterns for tenant isolation, scalability, observability, and operational excellence.
- Drive AI Integration: Partner with engineering teams to embed AI/Gen AI and intelligent automation.
- Evaluate Emerging Technologies: Assess new cloud, AI, and platform capabilities for innovation.
- Governance and Compliance Focus: Maintain high standards and manage cross-team workflows.
- Set Enterprise Architecture Standards: Drive consistency through reference architectures, design patterns, and governance.
- Review Architecture and Coordination: Lead architectural review processes and communication for GridOS Plan applications.
- Formalize Data Models and API Standards: Lead the formalization and standardization of data models and API standards for interoperability and efficiency, leveraging standards such as CIM where appropriate.
- Champion Security & Compliance: Ensure architectures meet enterprise security, privacy, and regulatory requirements.
- Solution Backlog Planning and Dependency Management: Manage cross-team dependencies regarding architecture standards and deliverables.
- Coaching & Collaborative Culture Focus: Elevate team capability and knowledge sharing by working with SteerCo and developer teams to establish standard practices for GridOS Plan applications.
- Mentor Senior Architects and Engineers: Provide technical leadership, coaching, and guidance across multiple teams.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) with 12+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 5 years in architectural leadership roles.
Key Knowledge & Experience
- Cloud, Infrastructure, & DevOps: Extensive experience running and orchestrating large-scale production environments; deep expertise in cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and distributed systems; Kubernetes with software development, API aggregation, custom resources, Helm, and manifest standardization; experience with CI/CD, DevSecOps, and GitOps in IT/OT environments; proven SaaS design at scale (multi-tenant, global, high-availability).
- Software Architecture & Modernization: Building and evolving modern stacks; micro-services, event-driven architectures, API design, micro-front-ends, and DevOps automation; strong background in secure, zero-trust architectures; modernizing monoliths into API-based micro-services; on-premises and cloud delivery; mobile architecture for field operations with offline support.
- Data Engineering & Interoperability: Data-centric design, data modeling, streaming, and analytics platforms; knowledge of data mesh/fabric principles; API standards and contract-based development models.
- AI & Strategic Integration: AI/GenAI integration, model deployment, inference pipelines, responsible AI patterns; experience delivering enterprise solutions with multiple integrated applications.
- Leadership & Communication: Influencing stakeholders, translating requirements into features, executive-level collaboration, and clear communication of complex concepts.
Additional Knowledge (Advantageous)
- Energy industry technologies and standards (e.g., SCADA, geospatial modeling); familiarity with NERC CIP and CIM.
- GE Vernova solutions experience in GIS, field operations, network modeling, and power applications architecture; experience with large-scale AI systems, vector databases, LLM orchestration, or retrieval-augmented generation; enterprise integration patterns and domain-driven design.
