Job description

Description The Natural Gas Technician performs technical duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City's natural gas system. Once a month, for one week, the Natural Gas Technician is required to be on-call for emergencies.

During the on-call period, the Technician must be able to respond within 20 minutes. The Natural Gas Technician is subject to federally regulated drug and alcohol testing through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). Examples of Duties Participates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of natural gas mains, services, and regulator stations.

Responds to complaints from customer and contractors and to pipeline emergencies. Checks for leaks with leak detector and combustible gas indicators. Installs, maintains, and repairs gas meters and meter sets; installs, programs, and maintains radio read modules.

Operates specialized equipment, including natural gas leak detectors and combustible gas indicators, underground pipeline locators, pipeline tapping equipment, plastic butt fusion equipment, electrofusion equipment, and met-fit tools. Completes training to operate a backhoe, excavator, trencher, skid steer, directional drill, and dump truck. Responds to after-hours emergencies.

Completes work orders. Assists third-party contractors with annual cathodic protection, regulator station, leak survey, and atmospheric corrosion inspections. Maintains parts, materials, and tools inventory on assigned vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED; One (1) year of experience in a related field; Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; Possession of or ability to readily obtain SRCS Natural Gas Operator Qualifications within 12 months of employment; Valid State of Georgia Driver's License.
