Job description

Application Developer I 

Job Summary

The Developer I, Application for Asset Technology AMI position within Gas Technology Delivery will work with limited supervision to design and develop custom applications to support the AMI Technology portfolio utilized by Southern Company Gas as well as the build and support of Southern Company Gas COTS applications. 

The ideal candidate is an experienced developer with strong technical expertise in Microsoft backend technologies, Angular-based frontend development, and API integration, coupled with hands-on experience in CI/CD pipeline automation and AI-driven solutions. This position plays a key role in advancing Southern Company Gas's digital transformation initiatives by implementing modern, scalable, and intelligent application architectures

This role reports to the Supervisor, Gas Asset Technology-AMI.

Development I, Application - Essential Duties Include  

  • Develop solutions that leverage (when COTS system) rather than customization.
  • Create and modify Technical Design documents.     
  • Collaborate with others to plan for coding and overall program development.
  • Translate specifications to create code that meets performance expectations/coding requirements.
  • Modify existing software to correct errors, to adapt it to new hardware, or to upgrade interfaces and improve performance based on specifications, with supervision.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, maintain and improve existing software.
  • Plan and participate in system testing as required. 
  • Develop technology solutions and corresponding documentation for complex problems using deep technical expertise and creativity. 
  • Plan and participate in deployment activities to implement designed solutions. 
  • Maintain and follow production support processes focused on identification and mitigation of root cause.
  • Flex to meet customer demands (production support and project work).
  • Prioritize work and deliver on project commitments.
  • Provide on-call support both solving issues independently as well as assisting other personnel 
  • Support and mentor less experienced personnel.
  • Considerable interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively is essential.
  • Ensure strategies are aligned with Technology Organization goals and strategies. 

Skills/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in MIS, Computer Science or a related field 

  • A deep, comprehensive knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle and development principles

  • Interest in and passion for learning and working in a fast-paced environment

  • Extensive hands-on backend development experience designing, building, and maintaining enterprise applications with Microsoft technologies such as .NET Core 8+, .NET Framework 4.8+, C#, Web API Core, EF Core/LINQ, Dependency Injection, ETL/SSIS, T-SQL, and SQL Server 2019+.

  • Extensive hands-on front-end development experience utilizing Angular 15+, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS/SASS, Bootstrap, Material Design, Node.js, Angular CLI, Kendo UI, and RxJS libraries

  • Extensive experience with Azure platform; skilled in using Azure DevOps for version control, branching, merging, publishing, and implementing CI/CD pipelines (Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, and Deployment).

  • Experience applying AI technologies in application development and solution design, integrating machine learning, predictive analytics, and intelligent automation to enhance functionality, efficiency, and decisionmaking

  • Strong familiarity with RESTful APIs

  • Practical experience with Agile methodologies including Scrum and Kanban

  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and conflicting priorities 

  • Ability to work with business partners and peers of varying levels of technical proficiency 

  • Experience with various sized projects, enhancement projects and production support

  • Ability to identify root causes for routine problems while working with other technical staff

  • Deep experience creating Technical Design Documents and Specifications

  • Deep experience with software development projects.

  • Ability to develop unit testing of code components or complete applications.

  • Experience in system development practices, methodology and tools 

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Ability to provide on-call support both solving issues independently as well as assisting other, less experienced on-call personnel 

  • Advanced understanding of various technical principles, theories and concepts 

  • Broad understanding of a wide range of technical areas 

  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to translate complex or technical ideas into non-technical language 

  • Strong understanding of ITIL principles and experience with ITIL processes
