What are gap year programs?

Gap year programs are structured experiences that students typically participate in between high school and college or during a break from formal education. These programs can include travel, volunteering, internships, language study, or work experiences designed to promote personal growth and skill development. Gap year programs help participants gain real-world experience, clarify academic and career goals, and often foster greater independence. Many students find that taking a gap year boosts their confidence and motivation when they return to school. Some universities even encourage or defer admission for students who wish to take a gap year.

What are some common challenges participants face during a gap year program, and how can they be addressed?

Gap year program participants often encounter challenges such as adapting to new environments, managing their time independently, and balancing travel or volunteering with personal growth goals. To overcome these challenges, it's important to set clear objectives, maintain regular communication with program coordinators, and seek support from peers or mentors within the program. Many programs offer structured check-ins, workshops, and community activities to help participants stay engaged and make the most of their experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a gap year program coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Gap Year Program Coordinator, you need strong organizational skills, experience in program management, and a background in education or youth development. Familiarity with travel planning software, risk management systems, and first aid certification is often expected. Excellent communication, cultural awareness, and problem-solving abilities help you connect with students and respond to diverse situations. These skills ensure the program runs smoothly, participants are safe, and students gain meaningful experiences during their gap year.

What is the difference between Gap Year Program vs Volunteer Coordinator?

AspectGap Year ProgramVolunteer Coordinator
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; sometimes college enrollmentRelevant experience in volunteer management; sometimes certifications in nonprofit work
Work EnvironmentTemporary, educational, travel-focused settingsOffice-based, community centers, nonprofit organizations
Employer & Industry UsageEducational institutions, travel organizations, NGOsNonprofits, community organizations, charities

The main difference is that a Gap Year Program offers young individuals a structured opportunity to travel, learn, and gain life experience during a gap year, often with minimal professional credentials required. In contrast, a Volunteer Coordinator manages volunteer programs, requiring experience in organization and nonprofit work. While both roles involve community engagement, the Gap Year Program is more educational and travel-oriented, whereas Volunteer Coordinators focus on managing volunteers within organizations.

Job description

At Summit Orthopedics, we recognize the impact each member of the Summit Family has on one another and on our patients every day. Join a patient-first environment where our values — Better together, Own it, Nimble, Excellence, and Service — are lived down to our BONES. At Summit, team members feel respected, valued, and connected to meaningful work, contributing to a collaborative, community-centered culture built on mutual respect and enjoyment.

Summit Orthopedics was founded on a vision to bring comprehensive musculoskeletal care to the Minneapolis/ St. Paul metro area, as well as, Greater Minnesota and Wisconsin communities. With over two dozen locations in the greater Twin Cities region and Western Wisconsin, Summit Orthopedics makes it easy to find the expert orthopedic care you need close to home.

What we have here at Summit is special. We are a group of people coming together in collaboration to serve others, providing patients the means to achieve quality of life via orthopedic health and wellness. All of this is done so that they may stay active, healthy, and engaged in the activities and interests that make their lives richer and more fulfilling.

As part of a team in a clinic or Orthopedic Urgent Care Walk-in setting, the Orthopedic Clinical Assistant will provide clinical support in the provision of quality orthopedic care and treatment of patients and perform assigned administrative duties. Under supervision, and as direct support to physicians and/or other providers, clinical duties may include rooming of patients, obtaining medical history information, preparation of patient for evaluation, fitting and dispensing of durable medical equipment, casting, splinting and other assigned procedures. This role communicates with and provides information to patients and other care team providers, handles updating and managing patient records, facilitates follow-up care for patients, and assists in completing required paperwork.

We are seeking full-time gap year students to be part of an Orthopedic Clinical Assistant (OCA) program that will be based in the Twin Cities. This experience includes opportunities to meet with our physicians for additional learnings, shadow other areas of the organization, and gain invaluable experience in an orthopedic outpatient setting.  Opportunities are likely to start in September or June but start times may vary as positions become available.

This is a full-time position benefit-eligible position, providing primary support to a Physician team or in a float setting. • Monitor patient flow, room patients and obtain and record medical histories and prepare patient for evaluation and/or treatment.
  • Prepare required instruments and equipment for examinations.  Clean and stock exam/procedure rooms, including instruments and equipment, between patient appointments.
  • Assist with casting, splinting, suture and staple removal, fitting and dispensing of Durable Medical Equipment (DME) as appropriate, and as directed by provider.
  • Provide standardized patient education instructions verbal or written.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments and appointments for further evaluation, testing, as needed, verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Refill prescriptions on behalf of ordering physician
  • Perform administrative duties, including manage patient charts to ensure accuracy and completion, sending and receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab and x-ray and other related reports, and completing and sending necessary paperwork.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Summit's hiring range for this position is $22.70 to $28.38 per hour. The hired candidate may be eligible to receive additional compensation in the form of bonuses, differentials and/or deferred compensation. In addition to our base salary, we offer a comprehensive total rewards package that aligns with our vision of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. This includes medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, paid time off and 401(k)/profit sharing retirement plan. If you are hired at Summit, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and internal equity.
