What is a Game Science Studio?

A Game Science Studio job involves applying data science, psychology, and game design principles to analyze player behavior, improve game mechanics, and enhance user engagement. Professionals in this field work with data analytics, A/B testing, and game balancing to optimize player experience and business outcomes. They collaborate with designers, developers, and product managers to create data-driven insights that inform game development and monetization strategies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Game Science Studio position?

To thrive in a Game Science Studio role, you need a solid background in game design, mathematics, data analysis, and user research, typically backed by a degree in game development, computer science, or related fields. Familiarity with development tools like Unity or Unreal Engine, statistical modeling software, and version control systems such as Git is often expected. Job description

Description

Location: Fredericksburg, VA (On-site)

Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship Required

Clearance: Ability to obtain a clearance up to Top Secret if needed.

Obsidian Labs, the advanced research, prototyping, and rapid experimentation arm of Obsidian Solutions Group, is seeking a Software Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team.

We build data-centric, distributed simulation environments that go beyond traditional software. In this role, you will help us integrate 3D immersive technologies (AR/VR), AI/ML, and secure real-time data pipelines into unified platforms used for comprehensive training, operational planning, and live mission support. We are looking for someone who can help us take complex sensor data-from micro-controllers at the tactical edge to massive datasets in the cloud-and turn it into clear, actionable, web-based visualizations that empower users in both training exercises and real-world operational environments.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Develop Web-Based Visualizations: Build intuitive, high-performance dashboards and interactive web tools to visualize complex datasets, including atmospheric and environmental sensor data.
  • Architect Secure Data Pipelines: Design and implement end-to-end secure messaging solutions to move data reliably between local tactical devices (including micro-controllers and mobile) and cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Build Full-Stack Applications: Develop and maintain the backend APIs and frontend interfaces that serve as the control centers for our simulation ecosystems.
  • Develop Simulation Environments: Contribute to the creation of interactive, collaborative 3D environments using game engines (Unity3D preferred).
  • Ensure Security & Quality: Implement robust encryption (e.g., AES-256), secure network protocols (TLS), and access controls; write automated tests and participate in code reviews to ensure our software is resilient and reliable.
  • Collaborate on R&D: Work closely with hardware teams and subject matter experts to prototype new capabilities for defense and rapid-innovation contracts.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Experience: 4+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Core Full-Stack Skills: Strong programming skills in modern languages (such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or C#) and experience building web applications backed by databases.
  • Networking & Security: A solid understanding of secure, real-time data communication, including encryption standards (AES, TLS), and secure networking principles across the entire lifecycle, from edge devices to the cloud.
  • Visualization & Data: Experience with web-based data visualization libraries and a knack for making complex technical datasets intuitive. Preferred experience includes working with scientific data formats (e.g., NetCDF, HDF5), weather/environmental modeling outputs (e.g., WRF), and consuming GIS or meteorological APIs for real-time spatial mapping.
  • Game Engine Exposure: Professional or strong project experience working with 3D applications, digital twins, or game engines (Unity3D preferred).
  • Testing & Quality: Experience writing clean, reliable code and using automated testing frameworks to ensure software quality.
  • AI/ML Integration: A proactive interest in AI/ML, with the ability to support the full lifecycle of intelligent solutions-from identifying and sourcing high-quality training data and refining models, to integrating these tools into simulation pipelines to create clear, actionable value for our projects.
  • Adaptability & R&D Mindset: A drive to learn new frameworks, tackle unique R&D challenges, and work in an agile, collaborative environment where your ability to solve novel problems is more important than your familiarity with any single legacy tool.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Data Serialization: Experience with Google Protocol Buffers (Protobuf) for efficient, high-speed data exchange.
  • Tactical Edge Development: Experience with mobile app development using Android Studio or the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK) plugin ecosystem.
  • Platform Experience: Experience working across the stack, from firmware/micro-controllers to consumer mobile and cloud environments (AWS GovCloud).
  • Defense Networking: Familiarity with defense data protocols (e.g., Cursor-on-Target, DIS, HLA) or geospatial mapping tools.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Normal office and lab environment.
  • Occasional work in simulation labs, field testing environments, or training facilities.
  • Travel Requirements: Up to 35%
