Is 30 too old to get into game dev?

Game development is a field open to individuals of all ages, and many successful developers start or transition into the industry later in life. Skills such as programming, design, and familiarity with tools like Unity or Unreal Engine are more important than age, and continuous learning can help new entrants succeed regardless of when they start.

Will game dev be replaced by AI?

Game developers create and design video games, and while AI tools can assist with tasks like procedural content generation and testing, they are unlikely to fully replace human developers due to the need for creativity, problem-solving, and understanding player experience. AI can enhance productivity but does not currently replace the need for skilled game design and development expertise.

Is 23 too late to start game dev?

Game developers can start at any age, including 23, as success depends on skills, portfolio, and experience rather than age. Many professionals enter the field through self-learning, online courses, or coding bootcamps, and age is rarely a barrier to entering the industry. Building a strong foundation in programming, design, and game engines like Unity or Unreal can help accelerate your career regardless of when you start.

What jobs can I get as a game developer?

As a game developer, you can pursue roles such as game programmer, game designer, level designer, graphics programmer, or quality assurance tester. These positions often require skills in programming languages like C++ or C#, familiarity with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine, and a strong understanding of game development processes.

Job description

Amazon Games is looking for a Senior Game Producer to join us as we build exciting new casual mass market games with a multiplayer component. You will help establish an entirely new category for gaming and should be comfortable with a degree of ambiguity that's higher than most projects. In this role you will lead game development, organizing milestones and schedules, aligning product visions and facilitating communication across both internal and external teams.

You'll also be innovating new ways for users to play games, working closely with designers, artist and technical leads to ensure they are hitting the highest quality bar possible. We think big, create great IPs, and work with some of the biggest and most beloved global IP licenses. We are customer-obsessed and build our games with a focus on innovation and quality to nurture long-term relationships with our global customers and partners.

The opportunity to delight millions of gamers is massive, but it's also an ambiguous challenge. You will leverage your game production knowledge to create magical experiences for Amazon customers who play games. You'll work with world-class external game developers to build great games while establishing respectful and collaborative relationships.

You thrive in an entrepreneurial environment and will collaborate with art, design, engineering, and other stakeholders to resolve ambiguity and balance competing priorities.
Key job responsibilities
- Be part of a multi-disciplinary team and work closely with external developers to ideate, build, and launch great original games, while refining our workflows and improving our processes.
- Be a self-starter who can work alone or as a member of a team.
- Have a penchant for digging deep and finding solutions to complex game production problems.
- Excellent communication skills, as well as analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects and interface with all levels within the organization with candor and respect.
- Translate stakeholder feedback into clear directions for external agencies and developing partners.
- Be able to take the high strategic view as well as dive deep and execute.
- Leverage data-driven customer insights and deep knowledge of formats and placements to make informed decisions.
- Identify areas of risk and establish/execute mitigation plans.
- Manage production processes including establishing milestones, tracking progress and managing risk, working with multiple contributors including internal and external development teams
- Own and drive review processes to ensure buy-in from product leadership, marketing leadership and Amazon Games executive leadership
- Remain up to date with products and services across the game industry, and within Amazon, Twitch, and Amazon Game Studios.
About the team

Across all of our teams and locations, we are united by a common purpose: to share great gaming experiences with customers around the world. We believe in a future where everyone is a gamer and everyone can create, compete, collaborate and connect through games, and we are looking for the right people to help us build that future.
