As a game developer, you write the code for video game software. Your code, combined with the work of other developers, brings video games to life on computers and gaming consoles. Your responsibilities are to design core game features and to collaborate with a team of other developers, graphic designers, and artists. Your job duties include game testing, debugging, and production in all aspects of gaming—player character creation, non-player characters, backgrounds, and gameplay. Being a gamer yourself gives you a solid understanding of the importance of game mechanics and storytelling.
| Aspect | Game Developer | Game Designer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Role | Program and build game mechanics, code, and software | Design game concepts, storylines, and gameplay experiences |
| Skills & Certifications | Programming languages (C++, C#), software development | Creative design, storytelling, game design tools |
| Work Environment | Development teams, coding environments, software studios | Design teams, creative studios, collaborative spaces |
| Industry Usage | Used across game studios for technical implementation | Used for conceptualization and gameplay design |
While both roles are essential in game development, Game Developers focus on coding and technical implementation, whereas Game Designers craft the gameplay experience and story. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and collaboration in the gaming industry.

This is a highly collaborative position that requires close partnership with research, administrative, and technical teams, as well as external collaborators. The Project Manager serves as the central hub of coordination and is expected to develop a comprehensive understanding of all active initiatives, anticipate project needs, define and organize next steps, and ensure that each project continues to advance efficiently and on schedule. This includes coordinating with BGC leadership, the software development team, research coordinators, students, postdocs, and outside collaborators. The ideal candidate will have significant experience with project management, including software development, as well as strong communication, technical writing, and organizational skills, and familiarity with project management toolsets.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:
1. Project Coordination & Oversight

Coordinate personnel and other resources across projects, identify risks or delays, and adjust plans or escalate issues as needed
Systematically track decisions, deliverables, and action items; proactively follow up with working group members and external collaborators to ensure progress, accountability, and timely completion of tasks
4. Documentation & Process Development

Support continuous improvement of project management processes within the lab
5. Coordination with Outside Stakeholders
Serve as the primary contact for stakeholders including research teams at other institutions, funding bodies, research participants, community members, and other project-relevant stakeholders
Support dissemination of project-related resources, typically research software or data
Ensure project materials are documented clearly for diverse stakeholder audiences
Ensure the project website remains up to date
Provide technical support and coordinate interactions with relevant members of the project team
