What Are Game Developers?

As a game developer, you write the code for video game software. Your code, combined with the work of other developers, brings video games to life on computers and gaming consoles. Your responsibilities are to design core game features and to collaborate with a team of other developers, graphic designers, and artists. Your job duties include game testing, debugging, and production in all aspects of gaming—player character creation, non-player characters, backgrounds, and gameplay. Being a gamer yourself gives you a solid understanding of the importance of game mechanics and storytelling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Game Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in C++, C#, or Java), a solid understanding of computer graphics, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, version control systems, and sometimes certifications in these platforms are commonly required. Creative problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this field. These abilities are crucial for building engaging, technically robust games and collaborating successfully within multidisciplinary development teams.

What are some common challenges game developers face when working on large team projects?

Game developers working on large team projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating across multiple disciplines (programming, art, design, audio), ensuring clear communication, and managing dependencies between different parts of the game. Balancing creative vision with technical constraints and deadlines can also be demanding. Adapting to shifting priorities and integrating feedback from playtesting are key aspects of the collaborative process, making strong teamwork and flexibility essential in this role.

What does a game developer do?

A game developer is responsible for designing, creating, and programming video games for computers, consoles, or mobile devices. Their work involves coding, testing, and debugging game software, as well as collaborating with artists, designers, and other team members to bring a game concept to life. Game developers may specialize in areas like gameplay programming, graphics, or artificial intelligence, and often use game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine to build their projects.

What is the difference between Game Developer vs Game Designer?

At the core of Epic's success are talented, passionate people. Epic prides itself on creating a collaborative, welcoming, and creative environment. Whether it's building award-winning games or crafting engine technology that enables others to make visually stunning interactive experiences, we're always innovating.
Being Epic means being a part of a team that continually strives to do right by our community and users. We're constantly innovating to raise the bar of engine and game development.
PRODUCT MANAGEMENT - FORTNITE CREATOR ECOSYSTEM
What We Do
As part of the Fortnite Creator Ecosystem team, Product Management collaborates with development, publishing, marketing, and platform teams to define product strategy informed by data and market insights. The team aims to empower creators to operate as game publishers, with the tools, insights, and support needed to build, launch, grow, and monetize successful games. This work centers on two core areas: enabling a robust creator publishing ecosystem and supporting sustainable creator monetization.
What You'll Do
As a Product Management Director, you'll be the owner of a critical part of the Fortnite developer economy. You will define strategy, guide execution, and ensure that monetization systems and promotional systems are balanced, scalable, policy-aligned, and empowering for creators.
In this role, you will
  • Own the strategy and roadmap for a portion of Fortnite's developer economy, spanning direct monetization products, paid-discovery tools, and economic systems that balance creator value, player trust, and platform sustainability
  • Lead cross-functional development of monetization systems and promotional products, working closely with Engineering and Design to translate strategy into scalable, reliable products
  • Partner deeply with Policy, Legal, and Trust & Safety teams to ensure monetization and promotional products are compliant, transparent, and aligned with Epic's principles and ecosystem governance
  • Define and track key success metrics and economic health indicators, and utilize data, experimentation, and qualitative insights to inform prioritization and iteration
  • Guide go-to-market and change management for monetization capabilities, including internal enablement and external communication with creators
  • Collaborate with Analytics and Insights to evaluate ecosystem performance, test hypotheses, and identify opportunities to improve creator outcomes and platform efficiency
What we're looking for
  • 10+ years of Product Management experience across live operations, virtual economy management, and feature/system design
  • A passion for games and a deep understanding of growth, retention, and monetization principles and mechanics that create value for players
  • Proven ability to design, launch, and operate monetization products in environments involving policy, fraud, and economic tradeoffs
  • Experience with promotional, paid-discovery, or marketplace products - understanding of editorial quality standards, trust and safety operations, and the economics of creator-facing promotional tools
  • Exceptional cross-functional collaboration skills, particularly with Policy, Legal, Engineering, and Analytics
  • Strong analytical background - experience working closely with data, analytics, or data science, and using metrics to drive decisions
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including experience writing concept pitches and product requirement documents
  • Someone who is user-focused, passionate, solutions-focused, and innovative. These traits equal success at Epic and influence everything we do
