What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fusion Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Fusion Systems Engineer, you need a robust background in physics or engineering, with experience in plasma physics, thermodynamics, and nuclear systems, often supported by an advanced degree. Familiarity with simulation software (such as COMSOL, ANSYS), control systems, and safety protocols, as well as knowledge of relevant certifications, are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork enhance performance in multidisciplinary project environments. These skills are crucial for ensuring the safe, efficient, and innovative development of fusion energy systems.

What is a Fusion Systems Engineer?

A Fusion Systems Engineer is a specialized engineer who designs, develops, and maintains the complex systems required for nuclear fusion energy production. They work on integrating various subsystems such as plasma containment, heating, diagnostics, and safety controls in fusion reactors. Their role often includes collaboration with physicists, material scientists, and other engineers to ensure the fusion system operates efficiently and safely. Fusion Systems Engineers are crucial to advancing fusion energy as a viable and sustainable power source.

What are some common challenges faced by Fusion Systems Engineers when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Fusion Systems Engineers often collaborate with specialists in areas like plasma physics, materials science, and control systems. A common challenge is bridging the communication gap between different disciplines to ensure all technical requirements are understood and integrated. Additionally, managing complex project timelines and coordinating experiments or simulations can be demanding due to the evolving nature of fusion technology. Effective teamwork, adaptability, and strong problem-solving skills are key to overcoming these challenges and driving project success.

Job description

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.
Combining decades of research, top talent, and new technologies, we're designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And we're working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.
We're in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we've raised nearly $3 billion in capital, making us the largest and leading private fusion company in the world.
Now we're looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who'll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.
If that's you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.
What you'll do:
  • Provide on-floor, hands-on manufacturing support for pilot and production lines
  • Assess the producibility of designs and provide continuous design improvement
  • Update design documentation with feedback from prototype and pilot builds
  • Assess non-conformances
  • Participate in root cause investigations
  • Suggest and lead prototyping efforts that reduce risk during manufacturing start-up
  • Create standard procedures and contribute to the creation of work instructions
  • Organize and lead design for manufacturing reviews
  • Work with production teams to improve process and/or equipment

What we're looking for:
  • BS in technical field - Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (ex. Manufacturing, Aerospace, Industrial, Materials, etc)
  • 4+ years' experience in mechanical, manufacturing, or quality engineering
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

Bonus points for:
  • Basic CAD skills (NX preferred, any acceptable)
  • Expertise in AMSE Y14 GD&T principles
  • Experience in a production environment
  • Design experience of large industrial equipment
  • Design experience with any of the following:
    • Composite materials
    • Welding
    • Vacuum systems
  • Knowledge of Lean or Six Sigma principles
  • Knowledge of quality systems and formal RCCA processes

Must-have requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, stooping, and sitting, for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics

$90,000 - $145,000 a year
Salary range for this full-time position + equity + benefits. The actual salary will depend on level, location, qualifications, and experience. The range displayed on each job posting reflects new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Benefits include:
