Functional Project Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, business process knowledge, and usually a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Jira), workflow tools, and enterprise systems (such as SAP or Oracle) is essential. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualities ensure that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with business objectives.

How does a functional project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

A Functional Project Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between different departments, such as IT, operations, and business units, throughout a project. They facilitate communication, align goals, and ensure that all stakeholders are informed about project progress and changes. Collaboration often involves leading regular meetings, managing expectations, and resolving conflicts to keep the project on track. This role requires balancing technical requirements with business objectives, making strong interpersonal and organizational skills essential for success.

What is a functional project manager?

Functional Project Managers are professionals who oversee projects within a specific business function, such as IT, finance, or human resources. They are responsible for planning, executing, and finalizing projects according to deadlines and within budget, while ensuring that the project aligns with the goals of their functional area. Unlike general project managers, they often have specialized knowledge in the area they manage, allowing them to coordinate effectively with both project teams and department stakeholders. Their role typically includes resource allocation, risk management, and communication between technical and non-technical teams.

This role oversees design standardization, production engineering, structural integrity, and continuous improvement to ensure efficient, code-compliant, and cost-effective modular building solutions. The position serves as the critical link between design, estimating, procurement, and production teams.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership

  • Establish engineering standards, best practices, and design guidelines for modular construction.
  • Oversee workload planning, staffing, and performance management of the engineering team.

Design & Product Development

  • Develop and maintain standardized modular designs and product platforms.
  • Ensure all designs meet applicable building codes (IBC, IRC, state modular programs).
  • Review and approve structural calculations, shop drawings, and engineered details.
  • Drive design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) initiatives.

Production & Manufacturing Support

  • Collaborate with plant operations to optimize production workflows and reduce bottlenecks.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables align with factory capabilities and sequencing.
  • Support troubleshooting of production issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs for engineering-to-production handoff.

Structural & Systems Integrity

  • Oversee structural design including chassis, floor systems, wall panels, and roof assemblies.
  • Ensure load paths, connections, and transport conditions are fully engineered and documented.
  • Validate MEP integration within modular constraints.

Estimating & Preconstruction Support

  • Partner with estimating teams to provide accurate engineering input and preliminary designs.
  • Support value engineering efforts to optimize cost, materials, and constructability.
  • Review project specifications and assist in proposal development.

Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure compliance with state modular programs, third-party inspections, and certifications.
  • Maintain documentation for plan approvals and regulatory submissions.
  • Support QA/QC processes and continuous improvement initiatives.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Implement new technologies, materials, and construction methods.
  • Drive lean manufacturing principles within engineering workflows.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce cost, improve quality, and shorten production cycle times.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Structural, Civil, Mechanical, or related field required).
  • 7-12+ years of experience in modular construction, prefabrication, or related industry.
  • 3-5+ years in a leadership or management role.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred (or ability to obtain).

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of structural design, load paths, and modular transportation constraints.
  • Experience with CAD/BIM software (AutoCAD, Revit).
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes and production line optimization.
  • Understanding of building codes (IBC, IRC) and modular compliance requirements.

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Strong leadership and team development skills.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional coordination.
  • Problem-solving mindset with a focus on efficiency and scalability.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

Our full-time employee benefits include:
