What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional programmer?

To thrive as a Functional Programmer, you need a strong grasp of functional programming paradigms, data structures, and relevant languages such as Haskell, Scala, or Clojure, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), build tools, and continuous integration platforms is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial for writing reliable, maintainable code and collaborating effectively on complex software projects.

What are some common challenges functional programmers face when working on large-scale projects?

Functional Programmers often encounter challenges in integrating functional code with legacy object-oriented systems and ensuring that team members are comfortable with functional paradigms. Managing state and side effects in a purely functional way can also require careful architectural planning, especially as the codebase grows. Collaboration with colleagues from different programming backgrounds may involve additional communication to align on best practices and ensure maintainability. Staying up to date with evolving functional libraries and tools is also key to overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Functional Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectFunctional ProgrammerSoftware Developer
CredentialsTypically requires knowledge of functional programming languages and paradigmsRequires general programming skills, often with multiple language proficiencies
Work EnvironmentOften works on projects emphasizing pure functions, immutability, and declarative codeWorks across various projects, including front-end, back-end, and full-stack development
Industry UsageCommon in industries focusing on high reliability, concurrent systems, or data processingWidely used across all software development sectors

While both roles involve coding, a Functional Programmer specializes in functional programming principles and languages, focusing on writing pure, immutable code. A Software Developer has a broader scope, working with multiple paradigms and technologies to build diverse applications. The roles often overlap, but the focus and expertise differ based on the programming approach.

Our commitment extends beyond business success as we strive to build sustainable processes that minimize environmental impact and foster vibrant and diverse communities around the globe.

How Will You Make An Impact?

The Functional Manager, Power Electronics Engineering will lead and develop a team of engineers responsible for power electronics and related electrical engineering activities across customer and internal development programs. The role combines people leadership, functional capability development, resource planning, technical oversight, and cross-functional project support. This position supports strategic engineering growth areas such as energy storage, critical power, data center infrastructure, renewable energy, industrial power systems, and other high-power electrical platforms. The Functional Manager should have a solid background in power electronics or equivalent domains, enabling guidance of the team, effective risk review, and consistent engineering execution. The role works closely with system architecture, project management, mechanical & thermal engineering, manufacturing, firmware, product validation, quality, supply chain, and customer-facing teams.

Location

This role will be based on-site at our St. Petersburg, FL Gandy Lab with relocation assistance to St. Pete as a possibility for the right person.

What Will You Do?

The ideal candidate is a functional engineering leader with enough technical depth to guide a power electronics team, support project decisions, and challenge engineering assumptions, while spending most of their time enabling people, improving execution, and building long-term capability. A strong candidate will have hands-on technical experience earlier in their career, followed by increasing responsibility in technical leadership or engineering management. They should be comfortable working across functions, supporting customer-facing discussions, managing priorities, developing people, and creating structure in a growing technical team.

Key Competencies
  • People leadership and coaching
  • Functional team development
  • Engineering execution discipline
  • Resource planning and prioritization
  • Technical judgment
  • Risk management
  • Cross-functional collaboration
  • Customer and stakeholder communication
  • Continuous improvement
  • Capability roadmap development
  • Practical problem solving
  • Ownership and accountability
Key Responsibilities
  1. Team Leadership and People Development - Lead, coach, and develop a team of power electronics engineers and related technical contributors. Define clear roles, responsibilities, and development priorities within the team. Support hiring, onboarding, training, career development, performance feedback, and succession planning. Assign engineers effectively across projects based on skills, workload, business priorities, and development needs. Build a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and technical excellence.
  2. Functional Capability and Engineering Standards - Develop and maintain the capability roadmap for the Power Electronics Engineering function. Improve common engineering practices, design-review discipline, documentation standards, and validation expectations. Promote reuse of proven designs, lessons learned, reference approaches, tools, methods, and technical knowledge. Ensure engineering work follows appropriate processes for requirements review, risk assessment, design documentation, validation planning, and release readiness. Support continuous improvement of engineering efficiency, quality, and consistency across programs.
  3. Technical Oversight and Project Support - Provide practical technical guidance during concept, design, prototype, validation, and production-support phases. Support review of technical risks, design trade-offs, project assumptions, and engineering deliverables. Help ensure solutions are robust, manufacturable, reliable, cost-aware, and aligned with customer and business needs. Work with project managers and system architects to align engineering resources, priorities, schedules, and deliverables. Contribute to feasibility assessments, technical proposals, customer discussions, and early opportunity evaluations when required.
  4. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Execution - Partner with system architecture, mechanical and thermal engineering, firmware, validation, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and project management. Ensure power electronics requirements, interfaces, risks, and constraints are clearly communicated across functions. Help translate customer expectations into practical engineering plans, assumptions, deliverables, and validation needs. Plan and manage functional engineering resources across multiple programs and priorities. Balance short-term project execution needs with long-term capability development.
