What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional programmer?

To thrive as a Functional Programmer, you need a strong grasp of functional programming paradigms, data structures, and relevant languages such as Haskell, Scala, or Clojure, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), build tools, and continuous integration platforms is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial for writing reliable, maintainable code and collaborating effectively on complex software projects.

What are some common challenges functional programmers face when working on large-scale projects?

Functional Programmers often encounter challenges in integrating functional code with legacy object-oriented systems and ensuring that team members are comfortable with functional paradigms. Managing state and side effects in a purely functional way can also require careful architectural planning, especially as the codebase grows. Collaboration with colleagues from different programming backgrounds may involve additional communication to align on best practices and ensure maintainability. Staying up to date with evolving functional libraries and tools is also key to overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Functional Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectFunctional ProgrammerSoftware Developer
CredentialsTypically requires knowledge of functional programming languages and paradigmsRequires general programming skills, often with multiple language proficiencies
Work EnvironmentOften works on projects emphasizing pure functions, immutability, and declarative codeWorks across various projects, including front-end, back-end, and full-stack development
Industry UsageCommon in industries focusing on high reliability, concurrent systems, or data processingWidely used across all software development sectors

While both roles involve coding, a Functional Programmer specializes in functional programming principles and languages, focusing on writing pure, immutable code. A Software Developer has a broader scope, working with multiple paradigms and technologies to build diverse applications. The roles often overlap, but the focus and expertise differ based on the programming approach.

About Us

At FreshDirect, we are reinventing the grocery experience.

Since day one, our mission has been simple: bring the best, freshest food directly from the farm to people's homes - faster, fresher, and smarter than anyone else.

We're not just a food company. We're a technology-powered, customer-obsessed team building one of the most innovative end-to-end food supply chains in the industry. From proprietary routing systems to our state-of-the-art fulfillment center, every part of our business is designed to deliver unmatched quality, convenience, and care.

We partner directly with farmers, fishermen, and artisans to source the highest quality ingredients - then use smart data, automation, and logistics to deliver them at peak freshness.

It's grocery shopping reimagined - and we're just getting started.

If you're passionate about innovation, care deeply about what people eat, and want to help build the future of food, we'd love to meet you.

The Role:

The SAP Functional Analyst - Production Planning (PP) plays a critical role in enabling efficient, demand-driven production operations in a high-volume, time-sensitive food manufacturing environment.

This role ensures that production planning, scheduling, and execution processes are tightly aligned with forecasted demand, freshness requirements, and operational constraints, while leveraging SAP ECC and integrated forecasting platforms like RELEX.

This position reports to the Director - SAP.

What You'll Do

Production Planning (Primary Focus)

    • Make-to-Stock (MTS) and Make-to-Order (MTO)
    • BOMs, routings, and work centers
    • Capacity planning and leveling
    • Planned and production order lifecycle
    • Order confirmations, scrap, and rework handling
  • Troubleshoot production planning issues in SAP impacting execution, inventory, and uptime.

Forecasting & Planning Integration

  • Support integration between RELEX and SAP for demand-driven planning
  • Ensure accurate flow of forecast data into SAP MRP and production processes
  • Continuously improve alignment between forecasting and execution systems

Cross-Functional & Integration Responsibilities

  • Act as liaison between business stakeholders, ABAP developers, and integration teams
  • Support system integrations using IDocs, RFCs, APIs, and middleware (PI/PO or equivalent)
  • Collaborate with upstream and downstream systems (RELEX, MES, WMS, logistics platforms)
  • Participate in interface monitoring, testing, and issue resolution
  • Develop functional specifications for enhancements and custom solutions
  • Execute unit, integration, and UAT testing

Project & Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in SAP enhancements, upgrades, and process improvements
  • Drive adoption of SAP best practices in production planning
  • Improve planning accuracy and operational efficiency through system optimization
  • Support go-live, cutover, and hypercare activities

What You'll Bring

  • 5+ years of SAP functional experience with strong focus on PP in SAP ECC 6.0 or higher
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Engineering, Supply Chain, or equivalent experience
  • At least 2 full lifecycle SAP implementations and/or major enhancement or upgrade engagements
  • Deep expertise in MRP, BOMs, routings, production orders, and capacity planning
  • Experience integrating external forecasting tools (e.g., RELEX) with SAP
  • Strong understanding of high-volume, time-critical production environments
  • Hands-on experience in at least one full SAP implementation or major upgrade
  • Proven ability to translate business requirements into functional specifications
  • Experience with testing, defect resolution, and production support
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced operational environments
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
  • Experience in food manufacturing, food distribution, or CPG industry
  • Exposure to SAP QM, MM, WM/EWM integration with PP
  • Experience with MES and shop-floor integrations
  • Familiarity with end-to-end supply chain and fulfillment processes.
  • Relevant SAP certification in Production Planning (PP) or S/4HANA Manufacturing, or APICS certification (CPIM/CSCP), will be considered an added advantage.
