How much do functional programmer jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for functional programmer in Nevada is $40.26, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $26.20 and $52.40 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional programmer?

To thrive as a Functional Programmer, you need a strong grasp of functional programming paradigms, data structures, and relevant languages such as Haskell, Scala, or Clojure, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), build tools, and continuous integration platforms is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial for writing reliable, maintainable code and collaborating effectively on complex software projects.

What are some common challenges functional programmers face when working on large-scale projects?

Functional Programmers often encounter challenges in integrating functional code with legacy object-oriented systems and ensuring that team members are comfortable with functional paradigms. Managing state and side effects in a purely functional way can also require careful architectural planning, especially as the codebase grows. Collaboration with colleagues from different programming backgrounds may involve additional communication to align on best practices and ensure maintainability. Staying up to date with evolving functional libraries and tools is also key to overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Functional Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectFunctional ProgrammerSoftware Developer
CredentialsTypically requires knowledge of functional programming languages and paradigmsRequires general programming skills, often with multiple language proficiencies
Work EnvironmentOften works on projects emphasizing pure functions, immutability, and declarative codeWorks across various projects, including front-end, back-end, and full-stack development
Industry UsageCommon in industries focusing on high reliability, concurrent systems, or data processingWidely used across all software development sectors

While both roles involve coding, a Functional Programmer specializes in functional programming principles and languages, focusing on writing pure, immutable code. A Software Developer has a broader scope, working with multiple paradigms and technologies to build diverse applications. The roles often overlap, but the focus and expertise differ based on the programming approach.

Job description

Mission Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated Vehicle Integration Staff / Senior Engineer to play a critical role in the integration, validation, and troubleshooting of next-generation vehicle platforms. This position will serve as a technical leader within the Vehicle Integration team, driving root cause analysis of complex vehicle-level issues while ensuring seamless integration of electrical, electronic, and networked systems.

The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on debugging skills with a systems level understanding of vehicle architectures, communication networks, and ECU interactions. This role requires close collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams to rapidly identify, resolve, and prevent integration issues throughout the vehicle development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:
  • ย  ย  Lead investigation and root cause analysis of complex vehicle integration issues across electrical, network, software, and hardware domains.
  • ย  ย  Utilize structured problem-solving methodologies to identify dominant failure modes and implement robust corrective actions.
  • ย  ย  Integrate, configure, and validate ECUs, sensors, actuators, and embedded systems at the vehicle level.
  • ย  ย  Debug and validate vehicle communication networks, including CAN, CAN FD, Automotive Ethernet, and gateway routing.
  • ย  ย  Develop and execute vehicle integration, design validation, and product validation test plans.
  • ย  ย  Diagnose and resolve hardware-software interaction issues impacting vehicle functionality and performance.
  • ย  ย  Analyze network traces, diagnostic logs, and system data to identify and resolve integration challenges.
  • ย  ย  Document root cause findings, corrective actions, and lessons learned to improve product quality and development efficiency.
  • ย  ย  Partner with subsystem teams including ADAS, Vehicle Engineering, Infotainment, Supplier Quality, and Connectivity to drive issue resolution.
  • ย  ย  Support vehicle builds, bring-up activities, and validation testing throughout prototype and production phases.
  • ย  ย  Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior engineers and cross-functional teams.
  • ย  ย  Support integration planning, technical strategy development, and prioritization activities with the Integration Lead.
Required Qualifications:
  • ย  ย  8+ years of experience in vehicle integration, automotive electronics, embedded systems, or related engineering disciplines.
  • ย  ย  Strong experience performing vehicle-level root cause analysis and troubleshooting of complex electrical and networked systems.
  • ย  ย  Deep understanding of CAN (CAN 2.0, CAN FD) protocols and associated tools such as Vector CANalyzer, CANoe, PCAN, or equivalent.
  • ย  ย  Strong understanding of Automotive Ethernet technologies (100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1) and protocols including DoIP, SOME/IP, and AVB/TSN.
  • ย  ย  Experience with electrical system debugging using oscilloscopes, multimeters, protocol analyzers, and other diagnostic tools.
  • ย  ย  Ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot electrical schematics, wiring harnesses, and connector systems.
  • ย  ย  Experience with vehicle network architecture development, communication routing, and topology design.
  • ย  ย  Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • ย  ย  Experience supporting OEM or Tier 1 vehicle programs from prototype development through production launch.
  • ย  ย  Familiarity with AUTOSAR architectures, UDS diagnostics, gateway configuration, and network management.
  • ย  ย  Experience with ADAS, autonomous vehicle, EV/HEV, or zonal vehicle architectures.
  • ย  ย  Knowledge of system integration processes, DVP&R development, and vehicle validation methodologies.
  • ย  ย  BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.

This role is based in our Las Vegas office and requires in-office days each week.
