Job description

D365 F&O DevOps Lead
Department: Information Technology
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Liberty, SC
Description
Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Company is seeking a seasoned D365 F&O DevOps Lead to serve as a player/coach leading a blended team of internal developers and offshore resources. This role is responsible for the full software development lifecycle within our Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations environment, including the design, development, testing, and promotion of custom code supporting D365 core functionality, third-party integrations, and embedded ISV modules.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical leader who sets the standard for development quality, establishes team policies and procedures, mentors developers at all levels, and partners closely with business stakeholders to deliver solutions that maximize the value of standard D365 functionality while minimizing long-term sustainability burdens.
How You Will Help
Technical Leadership & Team Management
  • Lead a blended development team of internal and offshore resources, acting as a hands-on player/coach who contributes directly to development efforts while guiding the team.
  • Establish and enforce software development policies, coding standards, and best practices across all team members regardless of location.
  • Manage offshore development resources, including work assignment, quality oversight, and communication across time zones.
  • Mentor and develop internal team members, providing technical guidance, code reviews, and career growth support.
  • Conduct regular team stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives using Agile or equivalent delivery frameworks.
  • Collaborate with the D365 Infrastructure Lead, Business Analysts, and functional stakeholders to align development priorities with business needs.

Custom Development & Technical Delivery
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy custom X++ code, extensions, and modifications within D365 F&O following best-practice extension-first principles.
  • Lead development efforts for custom business logic, workflows, forms, data entities, reports, and batch processes within D365.
  • Own the full code lifecycle from requirements analysis and design through development, peer review, testing, and production promotion.
  • Ensure all custom development is version-controlled, documented, and maintainable, minimizing technical debt and long-term sustainability risk.
  • Champion a 'standard-first' development philosophy, working with business partners to configure standard D365 functionality wherever possible before pursuing custom development.

Integrations & ISV Module Support
  • Lead development and maintenance of integrations between D365 F&O and external systems, including design of data flows, APIs, and middleware solutions.
  • Utilize D365 integration technologies including OData, custom services, Data Management Framework (DMF), and Azure-based integration patterns (Logic Apps, Azure Functions, Service Bus).
  • Oversee the technical management of embedded ISV modules within the D365 solution, including upgrades, compatibility testing, and vendor coordination.
  • Evaluate and onboard new ISV solutions, assessing technical fit, upgrade risk, and integration complexity.
  • Ensure integrations and ISV customizations are regression-tested and validated following D365 quality updates and version upgrades.

DevOps & Release Management
  • Own and manage the D365 F&O development pipeline using Azure DevOps, including source control (Git), build pipelines, and automated deployment processes.
  • Establish and maintain branching strategies, release management processes, and environment promotion workflows from Development through Test/QA to Production.
  • Coordinate code deployments and release activities with the D365 Infrastructure Lead to ensure alignment with environment governance and update schedules.
  • Implement and maintain automated build and test frameworks to improve deployment quality and reduce manual effort.
  • Maintain deployment documentation, release notes, and rollback procedures for all custom code changes.

Policy, Standards & Continuous Improvement
  • Define and maintain the development team's standards for coding, documentation, source control, testing, and peer review.
  • Establish processes for solution design reviews, ensuring proposed custom development is evaluated against standard functionality before proceeding.
  • Track and manage technical debt, proactively refactoring or retiring custom code where standard D365 functionality has evolved to meet the need.
  • Stay current on Microsoft D365 F&O platform updates, new development capabilities, and deprecation notices, assessing impact on the custom codebase.
  • Drive continuous improvement in team delivery velocity, code quality, and deployment reliability through tooling, process, and skills development.

Business Partnership & Solution Design
  • Partner with finance, operations, and other business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into scalable, sustainable D365 solutions.
  • Lead solution design discussions, presenting options that weigh standard configuration, low-code approaches, and custom development with honest sustainability trade-offs.
  • Participate in D365 upgrade and roadmap planning, advising on the impact of platform changes to existing custom code and integrations.
  • Support Business Analysts and functional leads during testing cycles, providing technical expertise and rapid issue resolution.

What You Will Bring
  • 7-10+ years of hands-on D365 F&O (or AX) development experience, including deep proficiency in X++ and the D365 extension model.
  • Demonstrated experience leading development teams, including management of offshore or blended onshore/offshore teams.
  • Strong command of D365 F&O development tooling including Visual Studio, LCS, and Azure DevOps (Git, pipelines, work items).
  • Proven experience designing and implementing D365 integrations using OData, DMF, custom services, and Azure integration services.
  • Experience managing ISV modules within D365, including upgrade coordination and compatibility validation.
  • Solid understanding of D365 application lifecycle management (ALM), including environment promotion and release management practices.
  • Deep knowledge of D365 F&O data model, security framework, and platform architecture.
  • Ability to establish and enforce development standards and mentor developers at varying skill levels.
  • Strong analytical and solution design skills with a bias toward standard functionality over custom development.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical teams and non-technical business stakeholders.

Preferred
  • Experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or supply chain environment.
  • Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Apps Developer Associate or equivalent certification.
  • Familiarity with Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps) as a complement to D365 custom development.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum delivery methodologies and tools such as Azure DevOps Boards or Jira.
  • Exposure to D365 dual-write, virtual entities, and Dataverse integration patterns.
  • Knowledge of Azure services including Logic Apps, Azure Functions, Service Bus, and API Management.
  • Experience evaluating and managing technical debt in long-running ERP development programs.
