As of Jul 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for fulltime historian in the United States is $86,335.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $66,500.00 and $105,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is there a high demand for historians?

The demand for full-time historians is generally moderate, with employment opportunities primarily in education, museums, archives, and research institutions. Job growth is expected to be steady but limited, often requiring strong research, writing, and analytical skills, as well as advanced degrees for many positions.

Can you make a living as a historian?

Fulltime historians can earn a living through employment in academia, museums, archives, or government agencies, often requiring advanced degrees and research skills. Salaries vary widely based on experience, location, and sector, with some positions offering stable income and benefits while others may be part-time or grant-funded. Building a career may also involve publishing, networking, and developing specialized expertise.

What is the highest paying history job?

The highest paying history-related job is often a university history professor or a senior researcher in historical consulting, with salaries exceeding $100,000 annually. Executive roles in museums, historical organizations, or government agencies can also offer high compensation, especially with advanced degrees and extensive experience.

What profession makes $300,000 a year?

A full-time historian typically does not earn $300,000 annually; such high salaries are more common in executive roles, specialized consultants, or professionals in finance, law, or medicine. Historians usually earn lower salaries unless they hold senior positions, work as university administrators, or have private consulting roles with additional income sources.
