Fulltime Geologist information

What does a fulltime geologist do?

A fulltime geologist studies the Earth’s structure, composition, and processes to understand how rocks, minerals, and landforms develop over time. They often conduct fieldwork to collect samples, analyze data in laboratories, and use computer models to interpret geological phenomena. Geologists may work in various industries, including environmental consulting, natural resource exploration, and government agencies. Their work helps inform construction projects, assess natural hazards, and locate valuable resources such as minerals, oil, and water.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fulltime geologist?

To thrive as a Fulltime Geologist, you need a solid background in earth sciences, strong analytical skills, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in geology or a related field. Familiarity with GIS mapping software, field sampling equipment, and laboratory analysis tools is commonly required, and certifications like a Professional Geologist (PG) license can be advantageous. Excellent observation, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with teams and conveying complex findings. These competencies are crucial for accurate data interpretation, ensuring safety, and supporting successful project outcomes in diverse geological environments.

What are some typical challenges a fulltime geologist might face when working in the field versus in the office?

Fulltime geologists often encounter distinct challenges depending on their work environment. In the field, they may deal with unpredictable weather, difficult terrain, and the need for extended travel or remote work, requiring adaptability and physical endurance. In contrast, office-based work typically involves data analysis, report writing, and project planning, which demand strong attention to detail and proficiency with specialized software. Balancing both settings is common, and effective communication with multidisciplinary teams is essential to ensure accurate data collection and project success.

What is the difference between Fulltime Geologist vs Part-time Geologist?

AspectFulltime GeologistPart-time Geologist
Work HoursTypically 40 hours/week, full-time commitmentFewer hours, flexible schedule
Employment StatusPermanent, full benefitsTemporary or flexible engagement, limited benefits
CertificationsUsually required to have relevant degrees and certificationsSame certifications may be required, but less frequently needed
Work EnvironmentField sites, laboratories, officesSimilar environments but with less time spent on-site

Fulltime Geologists work full-time hours with permanent employment benefits, often in field and laboratory settings. Part-time Geologists work fewer hours with flexible schedules, often on temporary or project-based roles. Both roles typically require similar credentials, but the fulltime position offers more stability and benefits.

Is there a high demand for fulltime geologists?

Fulltime geologists are in steady demand in industries such as oil and gas, environmental consulting, and mining, especially for roles requiring fieldwork, data analysis, and reporting. Employment prospects depend on industry trends, geographic location, and the level of experience and certifications held.

What type of fulltime geologist gets paid the most?

Experienced geologists working in the oil and gas industry or in senior roles such as exploration managers tend to earn the highest salaries. Specializations like petroleum geology, along with advanced certifications and extensive field experience, can also lead to higher pay. Geologists in remote or high-demand regions may receive additional compensation.

Job description

SENIOR GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER

Seismic, dams, and complex geotechnical work in our growing Vancouver office

Location: Vancouver, BC & Calgary, AB

Permament, Full Time

About the role

PRI is looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing Vancouver & Calgary offices. This is a hands-on senior role: you will lead projects end to end, seal your own work, and mentor the engineers and technologists around you.
The work spans land development, buildings, municipal and transportation infrastructure, and mining, including dams and tailings storage facilities. Seismic assessment is central to the role, as it is to any consequential geotechnical work in this region.

What you'll do

Lead geotechnical projects from scoping and site investigation through analysis, design, reporting, and construction support.
Direct design of foundations, settlement, slope stability, retaining and shoring systems, earthworks, and ground improvement.
Lead seismic assessment, including site classification, liquefaction triggering and mitigation, seismic slope stability, and seismic design parameters.
Provide geotechnical leadership on dams and tailings storage facilities, including Dam Safety Review input, stability and seepage analysis, and instrumentation review.
Plan and direct site investigations, and interpret field and laboratory data into practical, constructible recommendations.
Take professional responsibility for your work, sealing reports, designs, and field reviews under EGBC practice requirements.
Manage scope, budget, schedule, and fees, and mentor intermediate engineers, EITs, and technologists.

What you bring

P.Eng. registered with EGBC, or immediately eligible for registration in BC.
Degree in Civil or Geological Engineering with a geotechnical specialization; a graduate degree is an asset.
Minimum 8 years of progressive geotechnical consulting experience, leading and sealing your own projects.
Demonstrated seismic experience, including site classification, liquefaction assessment and mitigation, and seismic design parameters under the BC Building Code.
Dam or tailings experience is a strong asset, including dam safety work, stability and seepage analysis, or familiarity with the Canadian Dam Association guidelines.
Proficiency with geotechnical software such as GeoStudio, Settle3, PLAXIS, LPile, or gINT.
Strong technical writing, client communication, and project management ability.
Class 5 BC driver's license, and willingness to travel to project and mine sites, including remote work.

Why PRI

Real project ownership, with the multidisciplinary depth and in-house materials testing laboratories of a national firm behind you.
Technically demanding work across development, infrastructure, and mining, including dams and tailings facilities.
A growing Vancouver office with a clear path toward Principal and practice leadership roles.
Competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and support for professional development and EGBC obligations.
PRI is a multidisciplinary engineering and natural sciences consulting firm with offices across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Nova Scotia. We are an equal-opportunity employer and welcome applications from all qualified candidates. We particularly encourage applications from Indigenous professionals.
